DURHAM, N.H. - Freshman Macklin Celebrini scored a career-high two goals while classmate Tom Willander notched a goal and an assist in his collegiate debut, but the No. 1/2 Boston University men's ice hockey team fell at New Hampshire, 6-4, on Friday night at Whittemore Center.
BU (1-1-0, 0-1-0 HE) held a 3-2 lead late in the first period, but New Hampshire (1-0-0, 1-0-0 HE) scored three straight goals to take a 5-3 lead that it never relinquished.
Junior Luke Tuch tallied his first goal of the season, freshman Aiden Celebrini recorded a pair of assists for the first two points of his Terrier career and freshman Jack Harvey notched an assist in his collegiate debut. Sophomores Jeremy Wilmer and Lane Hutson also added one assist apiece, as did senior Dylan Peterson. Hutson's assist was his 50th career point.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Tuch got BU on the board just 2:53 into the proceedings when he deftly redirected a shot from Willander.
- The Wildcats scored a pair of power-play goals in span of 2:02 to grab a 2-1 lead midway through the period.
- BU evened the score at 14:46 thanks to a perfectly executed 2-on-0 by Wilmer and Macklin Celebrini, with the latter finishing the play for his second goal of the season.
- Willander then made it 3-2 just 1:54 later with his first collegiate goal. Aiden Celebrini gained the blue line and waited for the trailing Willander, who rocketed a one-timer past Tyler Muszelik (20 saves).
- UNH scored at the 17:07 mark to send the teams to the first intermission tied at 3-3.
- The Wildcats scored the first two goals of the second stanza to take a 5-3 lead.
- Macklin Celebrini's second goal of the game cut the deficit in half, as he took a feed from Hutson and quickly snapped a shot into the top right corner.
- Junior Mathieu Caron (29 saves) made a terrific stop on a breakaway bid late in the frame to keep BU within one heading into the final 20 minutes.
- Peterson had an excellent chance to tie the game during a Terrier penalty kill as he forced a turnover and raced in alone on Muszelik, but his shorthanded bid was turned aside.
- The Wildcats restored their two-goal advantage with 16:56 to play in the third.
- Caron made an outstanding save on a 2-on-1 with 11:15 left to keep Terriers in it and then stopped another breakaway chance later in the frame.
- With Caron pulled for an extra attacker, Tuch nearly got BU within one with 1:09 remaining in regulation, but after video review it was determined that he redirected the puck with a high stick.
GAME NOTES
- Macklin Celebrini has tallied three goals and one assist for four points through his first two games.
- Willander is the ninth Terrier in the past five seasons to tally multiple points in his collegiate debut.
- Hutson has totaled 16 goals and 34 assists for 50 points in just 41 career games.
- Wilmer and Hutson have each notched a point in both games this season.
- UNH went 2-for-5 on the power play while BU was 0-for-3 with the man advantage.
- BU had won 12 straight games against UNH prior to Friday night.
