Men's Soccer Rolls to 4-1 Victory over Navy

BOSTON – In a battle of five-game unbeaten streaks, the Boston University men's soccer team cruised to a 4-1 victory over defending Patriot League champion Navy on Saturday afternoon at Nickerson Field.

With their most goals scored since a 4-0 win over Holy Cross in 2012, the Terriers (7-2-2) remain atop the Patriot League standings at 4-0-1, as the Midshipmen (5-5-2, 2-1-1 PL) suffered their first conference loss.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Graduate student Eitan Rosen gave BU the lead for good in the 18th minute by receiving a through ball from graduate student Colin Innes and blasting a high-arching shot toward the far post.
  • In the 28th minute, the Terriers played a corner into the box, and senior Ryan Lee eventually collected the ball at the top of the box and sent a hard grounder that was tipped in by senior Griffin Roach for the 2-0 advantage.
  • Navy got on the scoreboard five minutes later when Jason Aoyama intercepted a failed clear pass from BU's backline and rifled a shot inside the near post from 22 yards out.
  • BU successfully defended against four corners in the first half to enter the locker room ahead, 2-1.
  • The Terriers needed little time in the second half to retake the two-goal lead, as senior Andrew Rent headed in a cross from Rosen at 47:26.
  • BU added one more score in the 83rd minute when senior Aidan Holmes collected an attempted clear header off sophomore Alex Bonnington's cross and shot it through the backline for his first goal of the season.
  • The Midshipmen attempted just one shot in the second half for the loss.
GAME NOTES
  • The Terriers last scored at least four goals in a conference game in 2010 with a 4-0 home win over Albany in the America East.
  • Rosen's five goals are the most by a Terrier since graduate student Quinn Matulis tallied five in 2021.
  • Rent became the third Terrier this year to score multiple goals, while Roach and Holmes boosted BU's total of men with at least one goal to 10.
  • The Terriers finished with a 13-7 advantage in shots and 6-4 lead in corners.
  • BU improved to 7-2-2 all-time against the Midshipmen, tallying four goals today after totaling four over the previous five contests. The Terriers tallied multiple goals for the third time after earning two in 2-1 victories in 2014 and 2015.
UP NEXT
  • BU will hit the road for two games next week, starting at Harvrd on Tuesday (Oct. 10) with a 7 p.m. start.
  • The Terriers are on a four-game winless streak (0-3-1) in Allston with two of the contests going to OT.
