Late Heroics Continue for Field Hockey in 2-1 Victory over Columbia

BOSTON - The Boston University field hockey team stretched its win streak to four games on Sunday afternoon, scoring twice in the final 10 minutes to rally for a 2-1 victory over Columbia at New Balance Field.

Trailing 1-0, the Terriers used a corner goal from junior Payton Anderson to knot the game at the 50:43 mark. Less than five minutes later, freshman Nicole Lauro tipped in a shot from senior Thalia Steenssens to lift BU to the victory.

Senior Kate Thomason made four saves and the backs added a trio of defensive saves in the second half to allow for the late heroics.

BU improves to 7-5 on the season while Columbia falls to 3-9.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Columbia earned the game's first four corners and scored on the last one of those to take a 1-0 lead in the 25th minute.
  • Maya Walker tracked down a deflected shot off a corner and drilled a reverse-stick shot from the left side towards the cage, where Mckenzie Bloom tipped the ball in at the near post.
  • BU recorded one shot on goal in each of the first two quarters but Columbia netminder Katie Wimmer came up with a stop each time.
  • Senior Rachel Borzymowski prevented the Lions from doubling their lead by recording a pair of defensive saves in the third quarter.
  • BU finally got on the board on its third corner of the contest and it came while the Terriers were down a player due to a green card.
  • Anderson drilled in a corner shot from the top of the circle with assists from sophomore Megan Wetzel and Steenssens to make it a 1-1 game in the 51st minute.
  • Another key defensive save came on Columbia's final corner of the afternoon as Anderson swept away an attempt aimed towards the left post with under six minutes to play.
  • The game-winner was set up by Steenssens as she dribbled into the Columbia zone and then into the circle before weaving around two defenders and elevating the ball towards the far post.
  • Lauro tipped the ball to the back of the net before Wimmer was able to get a piece of it with 4:37 left in regulation for her first collegiate goal.
  • BU did not allow a shot the rest of the way and moved to 4-0 on its current six-game homestand.

GAME NOTES
  • Each team recorded 10 shots in the contest.
  • Columbia held a 9-4 advantage in corners.
  • Wimmer made five saves in goal for the Lions.
  • Steenssens now has nine assists, which leads all Patriot League players, and with her two today, she moved into a tie for ninth all-time on BU's career list with 23.
  • This was just the second meeting between the two schools as BU evened the series after falling to the Lions in a 2019 neutral-site contest.
