Women’s Basketball Wraps Non-Conference Play At Northeastern

December 21, 2023

BOSTON – Capping the 2023 calendar year as well as non-conference action for the season, the Boston University women's basketball program makes the short trip across town to Northeastern on Friday (Dec. 22). Opening tip is set for 12 p.m.

BU (7-3) has won two straight, and plays its first road game since Nov. 28 at No. 7 Colorado. With a win, the Terriers would secure eight non-conference wins for the first time as a Patriot League member.

Northeastern (4-5) enters the matchup on a four-game losing streak, with its last win coming against Wagner on Nov. 21. That was also the last instance the Huskies played at home, where they are 3-0 this year.

Friday's contest airs on NESN and FloHoops, which require their own subscriptions. As part of FloHoops' live-to-social initiative, the game will air free of charge on the FloHoops YouTube channel, Twitter/X account, and Facebook page free of charge for viewers.

TERRIER TIDBITS
  • The Terriers soundly defeated local Division III program Emmanuel 80-47 on Tuesday (Dec. 12) at Case Gym.
  • BU led for all but the first 10 seconds of the game in a wire-to-wire victory.
  • Senior Caitlin Weimar registered a 20-point, 10-rebound double-double in just over 28 minutes.
  • Junior Alex Giannaros and sophomore Anastasiia Semenova each scored 16 points, the latter setting a new career-high on 8-for-10 shooting.
  • Semenova has recorded 28 points in her last two games after collecting 32 combined in her previous seven contests.
  • Averaging 16.3 points per game in her last four, Giannaros has made 10 of her last 18 three-point attempts.
  • Weimar has 876 career points at BU. At 107 rejections in Terrier Town, she needs one more block to take sole possession of eighth place in career blocks as a Terrier.
  • BU has scored 80 points in back-to-back games. That last occurred from Jan. 28-Feb. 4 against Lehigh (82-69) and Loyola Maryland (100-57), respectively.
  • The previous time it happened against two non-conference foes was Nov. 24-Dec. 2, 2009 vs. Northeastern (83-78) and Brown (87-58), respectively.
  • BU has incorporated six different starting lineups this season, with five generating at least one win.
SCOUTING NORTHEASTERN
  • The Huskies are 4-5 on the season, most recently dropping a 65-41 contest at Patriot League foe Holy Cross on Dec. 17.
  • Three of the Huskies' wins have come on home court.
  • The only other common opponent with BU besides the Crusaders on Northeastern's schedule is UNH, who defeated the Huskies 51-41 on Nov. 29.
  • Derin Erdogan leads the Huskies with 13 points per game and 40 assists.
  • Priscilla Edwards-Lloyd is in her first season as head coach.
  • Northeastern was projected to finish third in the CAA Preseason Poll, with Erdogan and Gemima Motema earning All-CAA Preseason honors, after going 19-12 last season and 13-5 in conference play to reach the CAA semifinal round.
SERIES HISTORY
  • Friday marks the 81st all-time meeting between BU and Northeastern in a series that dates back to 1976.
  • The Huskies are the most common opponent the Terriers have played in program history.
  • BU sports a 41-39 edge in the rivalry, though Northeastern has won two in a row and eight of the last 10 matchups.
  • The Terriers are 26-14 at home against Northeastern, but 13-25 on the road.
  • Last year, the Huskies were victorious at Case Gym, 66-65, on Nov. 7, 2022. Erdogan dropped 24 points, including the go-ahead foul shots with 1:33 to play, to spoil 23 points from Giannaros and a Weimar double-double.
