Terriers Turn in Strong Performances at Bruce Lehane Scarlet & White Invite

February 4, 2023

BOSTON – The Boston University track & field team wrapped up a competitive day at the Track & Tennis Center at the Bruce Lehane Scarlet & White Invite on Saturday. BU had seven top-10 program marks at the meet, three of which came just shy of tying school records.

Freshman Vera Sjöberg was the first Terrier to crack the program top-10 all-time performance list on Saturday. She ran a 2:47.80 to notch the third-best time in program history and was just 0.18 seconds off tying the school record.

Sophomore Asia Hamilton was the top performer in the high jump. She cleared 1.65m (5' 5") to place first in the event. She also placed sixth in the long jump with a distance of 5.34m (17' 2.25").

Three Terriers that competed in the mile placed in the top-25. On the women's side, sophomore Daisy Liljegren ran to 15th with a time of 4:48.22. Grad student Marcel Aubry (4:07.15) placed 19th and senior Mike Hagen (4:09.26) placed 23rd on the men's side.

In the women's distance medley relay (DMR), team of Sjöberg, junior Isabela Shepard, grad student Megan Convery and Liljegren ran 11:19.01 for the second-fastest time in school history. A collegiate record was set in the same race by the University of Washington with a time of 10:46.62 to beat the previous record set by Oregon in 2017.

The men's DMR also featured the second-fastest time in school history. Freshmen Parker Schneider and Logan Popelka, and grad students Aubry and Aksel Laudon ran to a 9:45.01, just 3.97 seconds off tying the school record.

In the pole vault, junior Alli Lofquist tied for 1st with a clearance of 3.65m (11' 11.75"). She is now second all-time at BU with her new personal record. Sophomores Robin Rosen and Cailey Spanitz cleared 3.35m (10' 11.75"), a PR for both that keeps them tied for the 10th-best vault in BU history.

Two freshmen led BU in the 200m dash. Logan Popelka took third with a time of 21.21 and Jada Smith ran a 24.74 to place 11th. Also cracking the top-20 were sophomore Leon Christian (21.92) in 19th and freshman Ijeoma Ezechukwu (25.01) in 20th.

Junior Juliana Nakouzi led BU in the weight throw with a sixth-place finish. She threw for 15.80m (51' 10") to record the eighth-best all-time performance at BU. She previously held the 10th-best distance which she set earlier this season.

In the men's weight throw, sophomores Cole Tucker and Gabe Hickman competed. Tucker placed 13th with a toss of 14.59m (47' 10") and Hickman came in 17th with a throw of 13.77m (45' 2").

In the men's 800m race, Laudon led BU with an eighth-place finish with a time of 1:51.14. Four additional Terriers placed in the top-30: Schneider (1:52.23) in 16th, junior Max Gorriaran (1:53.33) in 22nd, senior Jack Jeffrey (1:53.87) in 27th and grad student Hayden Jennings (1:54.07) in 29th. The women's 800m race featured three top-50 finishes with Shepard (2:13.69) in 33rd, freshman Olivia Dodds (2:13.99) in 35th and freshman Lily Borin (2:16.27) in 43rd.

BU hosted an Alumni Mile in honor of legendary coach Bruce Lehane. Eighteen alumni participated and Paul Gennaro ('16) ran to first place with a time of 4:35.00.

The Terriers will wrap up their homestand with the David Hemery Valentine Invitational on Friday (Feb. 10) and Saturday (Feb. 11). Both days will begin at 11:00 a.m. with the women competing Friday and the men competing Saturday.
