BOSTON – Exactly one month after their first meeting, the Boston University women's basketball program rematches American on Wednesday (Feb. 8). Opening tip is set for 11:30 a.m.
With seven regular season games left on the year, BU holds a two-game lead over Holy Cross for first place in the Patriot League. Winners of 11 in a row, BU has not lost since Dec. 21, 2022.
American enters Wednesday with four league victories, good for eighth in the standings. However, the Eagles are just a game behind Colgate, Bucknell, and Lafayette, who occupy fifth, sixth, and seventh.
TERRIER TIDBITS
- BU captured its 11th-consecutive win, defeating Loyola Maryland at home, 100-57, on Feb. 4.
- Scoring 100 points for the third time in program history, and first since 1987, BU tied its single-game program record with 16 three-pointers.
- Senior Sydney Johnson led four Terriers in double figures with 20 points on 8-of-12 shooting.
- Like Johnson, classmate Maggie Pina and sophomore Alex Giannaros drained four threes for 19 and 18 points, respectively.
- Junior Caitlin Weimar tallied 16 points and nine boards.
- The Terriers lead the Patriot League with a NET ranking of 124.
- BU is atop the Patriot League both in field goal percentage (.452) and field goal percentage defense (.363). Each ranks in the top-35 among Division I programs.
- The Terriers are one of three teams in the nation shooting better than 40 percent from distance, checking in at .404. Only Gonzaga (.418) and Iona (.405) rank higher.
- Four Terriers are shooting over 40 percent from deep while making 10 or more threes: Giannaros (.569), Pina (.435), Johnson (.435) and senior Liz Shean (.412). If Giannaros met the NCAA's minimum percentage of team games played requirement (75 percent), she would lead the country with that clip.
- Johnson has scored 10 or more points 16 times this season. BU is 13-3 when she reaches that plateau.
- The senior is two assists away from 300 in her career, and 14 points from matching former teammate Katie Nelson '21 for 15th place on BU's all-time scoring list.
- Pina and classmate Maren Durant are two games away from 100 career appearances.
- In terms of field goal percentage, Durant's career 56.7 percent clip is the highest in program history. Weimar's 52.4 percent effort in a BU uniform is third all-time.
- Giannaros and Shean pace the all-time three-point percentage list at .454 and .431, respectively.
SCOUTING AMERICAN
- The Eagles enter the weekend having lost seven of their last nine, and are 4-7 in Patriot League play.
- Last week, American dropped a 52-48 contest at Colgate.
- The Eagles lead the Patriot League with 9.5 steals per game, and are also top three in free throw percentage (.750 - second), assists per game (13.7 - third), and field goal percentage (.424 - third).
- Emily Johns is the lone Eagle in double figures with 13.4 points per game on 46.7 percent shooting.
- Ivy Bales is top-10 in the Patriot League with 6.4 rebounds per game and 3.3 assists per contest.
SERIES HISTORY
- Wednesday marks the 26th all-time meeting between BU and American in a series that began in 1981.
- The Eagles maintain a 16-9 advantage in the rivalry.
- The Terriers have never beaten American in a road game. BU's only victory in Washington, D.C. came in the first meeting on Jan. 25, 1981, a 78-68 result on Georgetown's campus.
- The average margin of victory in the last five contests is 17.8 points. BU is 3-2 in that span.
- The Terriers took the first matchup at Case Gym on Jan. 8, 73-63. That margin has been BU's closest at home in six Patriot League bouts.
- Trailing by six at halftime, the Terriers outscored the Eagles 43-27 in the second half, including a 25-point third quarter. Sophomore Lauren Davenport scored 16 points off the bench, while Pina led all BU starters with 15 points and four assists.
UP NEXT
- BU hosts Senior Day against Lafayette on Saturday (Feb. 11), honoring Johnson, Durant, Pina, Shean, and Annabelle Larnard. Saturday will also mark the team's Pride Game.
- Opening tip is scheduled for 2 p.m.
