BOSTON - Eight former Boston University men's ice hockey standouts will compete in the 2023 Stanley Cup Playoffs, with the first round to begin on Monday night.
Four of those Terriers - Charlie Coyle, A.J. Greer, Matt Grzelcyk and Charlie McAvoy - will look to lead the hometown Boston Bruins to the Cup after a historic campaign in which they set new NHL single-season records for wins (65) and points (135). Coyle, the recipient of the Eddie Shore Award that is given to the player who shows exceptional hustle and determination, was one of just three Bruins to play in all 82 games. He totaled 16 goals and 29 assists for 45 points. McAvoy, last year's Eddie Shore Award winner, led all Bruins defensemen with 45 assists and was second among Boston blue liners with 52 points. Grzelcyk was second on the team in plus/minus (plus-46) and secured 26 points (4g, 22a) while Greer notched 12 points (5g, 7a) in his first season with Boston.
The other four Terriers will all compete in the Western Conference playoffs. Matt Nieto and Evan Rodrigues will take the ice for the defending Cup champions, the Colorado Avalanche. Rodrigues recorded 16 goals and 23 assists for 39 points in his first season with Colorado while Nieto played in all but one game in his first year with the Avalanche, totaling 12 goals and 12 assists for 24 points.
Dallas' Jake Oettinger was sixth in the NHL with a .919 save percentage and seventh in the league with a 2.37 goals-against average. Jack Eichel scored 27 goals and tallied 39 assists for 66 points in 67 games with Vegas.
The Bruins will open their series with Florida on Monday night at TD Garden (7:30 p.m.), with Oettinger and the Stars hosting the Minnesota Wild later that night at 9:30 p.m. Eichel and the Golden Knights will host the Winnipeg Jets on Tuesday at 9:30 p.m., with Rodrigues, Nieto and the Avalanche facing Seattle in Denver at 10 p.m.
