CAMDEN, N.J. – A pair of first-place finishes highlighted the second-ranked Boston University lightweight rowing program's performance at the 2023 Jefferson Dad Vail Regatta, hosted from May 12-13 on the Cooper River.
Sending three crews to the regatta, BU took home gold in the Collegiate Double and the Varsity 8, the latter with the Evelyn Bergman Trophy on the line. It marked the first time since 2019 that BU captured first in both events. The Terrier Varsity 4 also advanced to its respective Grand Final, recording a fourth-place finish.
BU's Collegiate Double, featuring
Kylie Lough in the bow seat and
Caroline Burchette in the stroke seat, won every race in which it competed. After finishing the time trials in 7:26.049 and advancing to the Grand Final in a time of 7:58.866 later that day, the duo completed the course in 7:44.215 to win gold, finishing nearly 11 seconds ahead of the runner-up MIT "A" boat.
The Terriers' Varsity 4, coxed by
Rayna Kuthiala and stroked by
Nina Palmer, fended off FIT in the time trials by just over a second in 7:10.286, then handily won the first semifinal in 7:43.258. With the Margaret McNiff Trophy up for grabs, BU rowed in a time of 7:24.247, missing the podium by about three seconds. FIT, Lafayette, and Western Ontario were the top-three crews in the Grand Final.
BU's Varsity 8, coxed by
Heather Shinn and stroked by
Delaney Bernier, turned a second-place time trial result into first-place efforts the rest of the regatta. After finishing in 6:23.183, seven seconds behind Georgetown in the first race, the Terriers won the semifinal in a flat 6:54.000, over 11 seconds ahead of Western Ontario. In the Grand Final, BU topped the Hoyas by over four seconds in 6:36.918.
The Terriers now turn their attention to the IRA National Championship Regatta, starting on Friday (June 2) on Lake Mercer in West Windsor, N.J.
