Terriers, Cardinal Split Senior Day Races

May 6, 2023

BOSTON – The No. 2 Boston University lightweight rowing program honored its senior class in the final dual race of the spring, hosting No. 4 Stanford on the Charles River on Saturday (May 6).

Both teams, competing against one another in a dual race for the first time in five years, split the two events. BU captured the Lightweight 4, while the Cardinal were victorious in the Lightweight 8.

The Terrier Lightweight 4, coxed by Rayna Kuthiala and stroked by Nina Palmer, built an early lead with a high stroke rate in the first 500 meters, and steadily expanded the advantage to over a length-and-a-half once the boat crossed the finish line in 8:05.1, over 10 seconds ahead of the Cardinal at 8:15.2.

BU's Lightweight 8, coxed by Heather Shinn and stroked by Delaney Bernier, overcame a narrow deficit to knot itself with Stanford on the approach to the Mass. Ave. Bridge. However, the Cardinal quickly responded with a burst to regain the edge, and finished first with a time of 7:01.4. The Terriers crossed at 7:06.7.

Throughout the day, BU honored Bernier, Perrin Lafky, and Nicolle Alvarez, who will earn their undergraduate degrees later this month. Lafky was the bow in the Lightweight 4, while Alvarez coxed an exhibition Fours boat.

The Terriers turn their attention to their final tune-up before the IRA National Championships, participating in the Dad Vail Regatta on the Cooper River from May 12-13.
