No. 2 Lightweight Rowing Repeats as IRA Runner-up; Two Boats Earn Bronze

June 4, 2023

WEST WINDSOR, N.J. – The Boston University women's lightweight rowing team repeated as national runner-up at the IRA National Championship Regatta with two boats earning bronze medals on Sunday on Lake Mercer.

The Terriers had third-place finishes in the double sculls and fours before the eight boat took fourth for a total of 57 points, two more than Georgetown and eight ahead of Harvard-Radcliffe. Princeton won gold in all three races to hoist the team title with 72 points.

Racing got underway at 8 a.m. with the doubles race as freshman Kylie Lough and junior Alanna Hoffman took on six other boats. BU stayed with Princeton in the early stages as both looked to close in on a fast start by Harvard-Radcliffe. The Tigers' boat moved into the lead for good before the 1,000-meter mark and the Terriers were in third for the last two-thirds of the race, finishing in 7:50.54, eight seconds behind Harvard-Radcliffe and over 15 seconds ahead of fourth-place Wisconsin.

The four-boat race was similar as junior coxswain Rayna Kuthiala and sophomore stroke Nina Palmer stayed right behind MIT for second place for the majority of the race before settling for a bronze in a time of 7:32.859, just 4.1 seconds behind winner Princeton. Senior Perrin Lafky, sophomore Savanna Jacovini and freshman Carly Milosevic teamed up with Kuthiala and Palmer for the medal finish.

In the V8 race, the Terriers were in the mix for a medal for the first half before a huge push by Georgetown in the third quarter. BU, which was coxed by sophomore Heather Shinn and stroked by senior Delaney Bernier, battled to the end before finishing a second behind Georgetown for third and 1.4 seconds ahead of Harvard-Radcliffe.
