Women's Soccer Heads to UConn on Sunday

BOSTON – Fresh off a season-opening victory, the Boston University women's soccer program hits the road for the first time in 2023, visiting UConn on Sunday (Aug. 20). Opening kick is set for 7 p.m.
BU vies to improve its unbeaten road-opener streak to five-consecutive seasons (3-0-1). UConn plays its first match on the campaign, which ignites a stretch of four home games in its first five contests.
Sunday's game will air on UConn+, the Huskies' website streaming platform. There is no cost or required log-in to view the game. Fans with Apple TV, Amazon Fire TV, or Roku can also search for the UConn+ channel.

- BU recently dispatched Vermont 1-0 on Thursday (Aug. 17) at Nickerson Field.
- Sophomore Giulianna Gianino potted the first Terrier goal this year on a penalty kick in the 35th minute, after classmate Natalie Godoy was fouled inside the box.
- Junior Celia Braun posted three saves, all of which came in the second half.
- The Terriers went 9-2 last season when scoring first.
- BU's defense surrendered just six shots, the seventh time under second-year Head Coach Casey Brown the Terriers allowed six or fewer attempts.
- Gianino has scored BU's first goal of the year in back-to-back seasons. The reigning Patriot League Rookie of the Year found the back of the net against Providence in 2022.
- Braun's shutout was her third-career individual shutout. Since arriving to Terrier Town in 2021, she has contributed to 13 blank sheets between the posts.
- Last season, BU went 7-3-1 on the road. Those seven victories were the most in a single season since 1999.
- Since joining the Patriot League for the 2013 season, the Terriers are 4-4 against Big East opponents. All four victories came against Providence. Marquette is the other foe BU has played from the conference during that span.
- Dating to the start of the 2021 slate, one goal has decided 18 of the Terriers' 23 wins.
SCOUTING UCONN
- The Huskies went 8-6-4 in 2022, and 4-4-2 in BIG EAST play.
- Playing in its third season in the BIG EAST, UConn reached the quarterfinal round, falling to St. John's in penalty kicks after a 1-1 score in regulation and overtime.
- In 2023, the Huskies were projected to finish sixth in the BIG EAST Preseason Poll.
- Chioma Okafor, UConn's leading goal-scorer from 2022 with six, was named to the Preseason All-BIG EAST Team.
- Abbey Jones matched Okafor with 13 points last season, seven coming on assists.
- Kaitlyn Mahoney started 14 games for the Huskies in 2022, posting a 0.80 goals-against average and an .825 save percentage.
SERIES HISTORY
- Sunday marks the 12th all-time meeting between BU and UConn in a series that began in 2003.
- The Huskies sport a slight 6-5 edge in the rivalry, and are 4-2 against the Terriers at home.
- BU's second-ever NCAA Tournament victory came against the 13th-ranked Huskies in 2005. Ashley Chassar scored the game-winning goal with 7:30 to play in the second overtime in a 1-0 triumph, while Christina Reuter posted seven saves.
- The two sides also squared off in the NCAA Tournament in 2009, when UConn won 1-0 in double overtime.
- As a student-athlete, BU Head Coach Casey Brown went 1-1 vs. the Huskies in her playing career.
- UConn took the last matchup between the programs on Sept. 8, 2019, a 3-1 result. Redshirt senior Kayla Ross is the lone Terrier that appeared in that match. BU's last victory over the Huskies was a 3-0 win on Sept. 2, 2018.
