BOSTON – The Boston University women's soccer program posted its second shutout in the 2023 season with a 0-0 draw against Rhode Island on Thursday afternoon at Nickerson Field.
BU (1-1-1) coaxed just four shots from the Rams (0-2-1), and generated 14 shots of their own. However, URI goalkeeper Faith Hutchins posted eight saves to hold the Terriers off the scoresheet.
Sophomore
Giulianna Gianino led all student-athletes with three shots. Junior
Morgan Fagan and sophomore
Mackenzie Stickelman each had two shots on target.
Celia Braun posted one save between the posts.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Three minutes, BU was awarded a free from 15 yards out. Gianino chipped the ball off the crossbar, and the Terriers couldn't convert on the play from there.
- Gianino later inserted a corner kick in the 10th minute that later found its way to freshman Samantha Aronson in the box. However, a Ram defender blocked her shot before it sailed to Hutchins in goal.
- In the 22nd minute, Stickelman pump-faked a shot to create space from 20 yards out, where Hutchins met a bouncing shot.
- Sophomore Margy Porta shuffled around two defenders in the 35th minute to whip a shot just wide of the left post.
- With four minute until halftime, sophomore Cam O'Connor attempted to tuck a chance near the right post from the corner of the 18-yard box, but Hutchins cut off the play.
- Nine minutes into the second frame, Fagan fed Mack in the middle for a 20-yard blast into Hutchins' arms.
- With a loose ball in the Rhode Island box, freshman Ciara Kennedy met it and tried a shot towards the low-left corner, coercing a diving stop from the keeper.
- BU's closest play came in the 68th minute, when O'Connor's cross from the right corner found junior Erin Sullenberger for a six-yard header. However, Hutchins lined it up for the save.
- With nine minutes to play, Fagan entered the box from the left corner for a right-footed strike towards the crossbar, but Hutchins leaped to snag the shot
- Fagan went on to cross the ball from the left sideline, where Gianino dished it off to sophomore Natalie Godoy. Her one-timer floated wide right of the post in the 85th minute.
