Field Hockey Tops Bucknell in Double-Overtime Thriller, 2-1

BOSTON - Senior Thalia Steenssens scored the game-tying goal and assisted on sophomore Megan Wetzel's double-overtime winner to lift the Boston University field hockey team to a thrilling 2-1 victory over Bucknell on Saturday afternoon at New Balance Field.

Steenssens found Wetzel all alone at the right post with 2:12 left in the second overtime as the sophomore redirected it in for her first collegiate goal.

Bucknell opened the scoring one minute into the second half and the Terriers responded soon after with Steenssens' first goal of the season.

BU, which was kicking off a six-game homestand, moves to 4-5 overall and 2-1 in Patriot League play. The Bison fall to 5-6 overall with a 1-2 conference mark.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The first half was a back-and-forth affair that included just two shots from each squad.
  • Bucknell got on the board first when Nicky Punt sent an elevated shot from the right side that Zoe Carlson-Pietraszek tipped in exactly 60 seconds into the third quarter.
  • The lead did not last long, however, as BU quickly earned three corners in a span of 2:26 and got an equalizer at the 34:09 mark.
  • After a shot by junior Payton Anderson was blocked, sophomore Martu Coulo collected the ball and was able to slip the ball through traffic to the left post, where Steenssens knocked it home to knot the contest.
  • BU allowed only one shot on goal the rest of the contest and senior Kate Thomason turned it aside in the 39th minute.
  • Neither team earned a corner in the fourth quarter but each team had chances to get a winner in regulation.
  • After Bucknell had two attempts from the left side that sailed wide, BU almost scored in the final minute of the fourth as Coulo dribbled around two defenders before having her attempt tipped by a Bucknell stick to the right side, where sophomore Caroline O'Brien collected the ball and ripped it toward the cage only to have it stopped by Bucknell netminder Sarah Althouse.
  • The Bison did not get a corner until overtime, earning one in both the first and second sessions of extra time, but were unable to record a shot either time.
  • Althouse came up big again in the final minute of the first overtime, making a point-blank save off a bid by sophomore Amalia Preece.
  • The winner came off an attack from the left side as Coulo penetrated the circle before getting a near-side pass to Steenssens, who gathered the ball and slid it over the far post, where Wetzel was wide open to end the game.

GAME NOTES
  • This was the 12th straight BU-Bucknell game that was decided by a single goal.
  • BU held a 13-7 advantage in shots and doubled up the Bison in penalty corners, 4-2.
  • Thomason made two saves to pick up the win in goal.
  • The Terriers are now tied with Lafayette for third place in the Patriot League standings at 2-1.
