BOSTON - Senior
Thalia Steenssens scored the double-overtime winner and had a hand in every goal to lead the Boston University field hockey team to a 3-2 victory over crosstown rival Northeastern on Sunday afternoon at New Balance Field.
It was the second double-overtime win in as many days for the Terriers, who are now an even 5-5 on the season. The Huskies fell to 5-6 with the loss.Â
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Northeastern opened the scoring late in the opening quarter when Alex Mega knocked in a centering pass in front of the cage.Â
- BU got an equalizer on one of its three second-quarter corners as Steenssens got her stick on a bid by junior Payton Anderson and elevated the ball high over the NU goalkeeper and in while positioned above the left post.
- The Terriers took the lead in the opening minute of the second half as Steenssens created space on the right side of the circle before sending a reverse-stick drive to the far post, where sophomore Amalia Preece tipped it in.
- The Huskies created the second tie of the game when Maria Armaganian scored off a corner at the 36:08 mark.
- The Terriers withstood spurts of corners by Northeastern in the late stages of the third and fourth quarters to keep the game deadlocked.Â
- After 36 minutes of scoreless play, Steenssens set up freshman Nicole Lauro on a breakaway in double overtime. Lauro's attempt from the left side was stopped by NU netminder Kristina Merashoff but Steenssens raced to track down the rebound and cut through the right bottom of the circle and got past a defender before pulling Merashoff out and putting the ball in the back of the cage with 6:43 left.
