Women’s Soccer to Host Maine on Thursday

September 6, 2023

BOSTON – The Boston University women's soccer program begins a four-game homestand on Thursday (Sept. 7) when it hosts Maine at Nickerson Field. Opening kick is set for 6 p.m.

BU (2-2-2) opens a stretch where eight of its next 11 games take place in Terrier Town. The Terriers are 2-0-1 at home in 2023, and are riding a four-game unbeaten streak on Commonwealth Ave. dating back to last season.

Maine (3-0-3) is playing its fourth of five-consecutive road matches. Two of those contests took place in the Bay State, however; the Black Bears defeated Stonehill on the road before a 1-1 draw at Merrimack.

TERRIER TIDBITS
  • BU enters the week following a 1-1 draw at Northeastern on Sunday (Sept. 3).
  • Trailing following a Huskies strike in the 60th minute, junior Erin Sullenberger redirected a cross from sophomore Giulianna Gianino into the net for the equalizer nine minutes later.
  • Sullenberger's tally was the first in her career.
  • Junior Celia Braun made seven saves in the effort. Her last was her 100th in a Terrier kit.
  • Tallying 29 saves on the season to this point, Braun is already seven stops away from tying her career-high in a single season.
  • To this point, three of the Terriers' five goals this season came from student-athletes who scored their first-career goal. Sullenberger joined sophomores Natalie Godoy and Mackenzie Stickelman.
  • All five of BU's goals this season have come from different student-athletes.
  • BU has conceded just two goals during its four-game unbeaten streak. In its last eight games on Nickerson Field, opponents have scored just five goals.
  • The Terriers' 11 home games second-most in a regular season since BU joined the Patriot League for the 2013 season.
SCOUTING MAINE
  • The Black Bears are 3-0-3 on the season, most recently tying with Sacred Heart on the road, 1-1.
  • Maine also tied with Patriot League foe Holy Cross back on Aug. 24, 1-1.
  • The Black Bears are one of 51 teams in Division I that have yet to lose as of Sept. 6.
  • Abby Kraemer paces the Black Bears with four goals and two assists. Kayla Kraemer and Gillian Rovers have each posted two goals.
  • Kira Kutzinski has recorded a 0.67 goals-against average and .833 save percentage between the posts.
  • Maine was projected to finish third in the America East Preseason Poll after a 2022 campaign that saw the Black Bears finish 9-3-5. Going 4-0-4 against conference foes, Maine fell to New Hampshire in the America East semifinals.
SERIES HISTORY
  • Thursday marks the 24th all-time meeting between BU and Maine in a series that began in 1995.
  • The Terriers sport a 16-3-4 advantage in the rivalry, and currently ride a 12-game unbeaten streak.
  • Both teams have not faced one another since 2012.
  • BU has a 41-16 goal differential.
