BOSTON - The Boston University women's ice hockey team had a three-game win streak snapped on Friday evening, dropping a 4-1 home contest to New Hampshire at Walter Brown Arena.
The Wildcats scored twice in each of the first two periods to take a 4-0 lead before sophomore
Luisa Welcke scored for the fourth straight game to get BU on the board.
BU also had a four-game unbeaten streak (3-0-1) come to an end and now stands at 9-9-2 overall and 7-7-1 in Hockey East play.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Wildcats opened the scoring at 6:16 of the first when Brooke Hammer popped in a rebound at the right post.
- Just over four minutes later, an unfortunate bounce for the Terriers resulted in a 2-0 deficit lead as a BU pass to start a breakout glazed off a UNH skate, causing the puck to redirect towards the net, where it went off a BU skate and in.
- The Terriers had the lone power-play chance of the first but could not take advantage of it.
- In the second, UNH doubled its lead to 4-0 with a pair of goals right at the crease.
- Tamara Thierus found Danika Botterill all alone at the left crease at 7:05 of the second before Mikah Baptiste set up Sadie Makokis in the same spot three minutes later.
- The Terriers scored the lone goal of the third off a rush as Welcke had a tap-in by the right post thanks to assists from graduate student Nadia Mattivi and sophomore Brooke Disher.
- BU had three power-play chances in the third, including a 47-second 5-on-3 advantage, but goaltender Sedona Blair and the UNH defense was up to the task each time.
GAME NOTES
- The Terriers held a 31-16 advantage in shots.
- Junior Callie Shanahan made her season debut for the Terriers after recovering from an offseason injury and made 12 saves.
- Blair turned aside 30 BU shots to earn first-star honors.
- BU was 0-for-6 on the power play while the Wildcats were 0-for-4.
