BOSTON – Hosting its first contest of 2024, the Boston University men's basketball team fell to Lafayette, 59-51, on Saturday afternoon at Case Gym.
The Leopards (3-12, 2-0 PL) shot 50.0 percent in the second half and held the Terriers (5-10, 0-2 PL) to 29.0 percent while boasting an 11-3 advantage in made free throws to remain unbeaten in conference play. Lafayette faced a 44-40 deficit with 8:04 remaining and went on a 16-4 run over the next seven minutes to pull away.
Despite finishing with four fouls apiece, sophomores
Nico Nobili (13 pts.) and
Otto Landrum (12 pts.) were the lone Terriers in double figures at a combined 25 points. Senior
Miles Brewster matched the duo in rebounds at five boards alongside a career-high seven assists and six points. Junior
Ethan Okwuosa nearly had a double-double with nine points and a team-high five rebounds.
Justin Vander Baan led all players with 16 points, nine rebounds and four blocks while adding three assists. Kyle Jenkins also finished in double figures at 14 points, and Ryan Pettit posted seven points with four assists. They helped Lafayette outscore BU off turnovers, 15-12, in the paint, 22-14, and in bench production, 17-9.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Nobili, Okwuosa and Landrum all flushed 3-pointers to help BU jump out to a 17-6 lead with 12:00 left in the first half.
- Following Landrum's trey, the Terriers cooled off though and would miss their next nine field goal attempts with Okwuosa finally hitting a jumper at 1:50 for a 23-18 lead.
- Sophomore Ben Roy scored from behind the arc with 22 seconds remaining, but Pettit netted a 3-pointer of his own from the corner to beat the buzzer and put BU's lead at just 26-21 entering the locker room.
- Landrum opened the second-half scoring with a slam dunk and added a jumper at 16:59 following Lafayette's floater to earn a 30-23 lead with 16:59 left.
- Jenkins scored six straight points, and Vander Baan converted on Pettit's steal with a jumper to give Lafayette its first lead, 31-30, at 14:06.
- Devin Hines scored on a fastbreak layup to extended the lead to 35-31 at 12:55, and Rubayo converted on a 3-point play in response to Nobili's 3-pointer to maintain a 38-34 advantage 90 seconds later.
- Facing a 40-38 deficit with 8:51 remaining, senior Anthony Morales netted a 3-pointer and set up Landrum's trey on the next possession to grab a 44-40 advantage.
- The Terriers though would miss their next seven field goal attempts and commit four turnovers over a seven-minute stretch.
- After hitting a jumper at 7:01, Vander Baan forced a turnover and fed Jenkins for a layup and 45-41 lead with 6:34 left.
- Vander Baan added a 3-pointer two minutes later to extend the lead to 48-44.
- Jenkins responded to Nobili's two free throws with a layup to keep the four-point advantage, 50-46, at 2:07, and added another to extend the lead to 54-48 at 1:15.
- The Leopards added five free throws in the final minute to help seal the victory.

- BU will conclude the two-game homestand on Wednesday (Jan. 10) by hosting American with a 7 p.m. start time.
- The home team won both contests last year with the Terriers claiming a 60-54 victory following a 76-74 loss.
