Women’s Soccer to Clash With Army West Point in PL Semifinals

BOSTON – After meeting in the final regular season contest, the Boston University women's soccer team once again hosts Army West Point, this time in the Patriot League semifinal round on Thursday (Nov. 7). Opening kick from Nickerson Field is set for 6 p.m.
 
No. 2-seed BU (5-7-6, 5-0-4 PL) will compete in its 11th Patriot League semifinal in 12 seasons as a league member. The Terriers are 6-3-1 all-time in the semifinal round, with its most recent victory coming in 2021.
 
No. 3-seed Army (12-5-1, 5-3-1 PL) dispatched No. 6 Navy in the quarterfinals on Sunday (Nov. 3) 1-0 to advance to the semifinals. The Black Knights seek their third consecutive Patriot League championship appearance.
 
On the other side of the bracket, No. 1 Bucknell hosts No. 4 Loyola Maryland at 7 p.m.
 
Thursday's match airs on ESPN+, with Justin Gallanty, Chris Vogel, and Brooke Alessi on the call. Free pizza will be the game for fans in the Nickerson Field concourse. TERRIER TIDBITS
  • The Terriers earned the No. 2-seed after finishing with 19 points in the regular season as the only unbeaten team in Patriot League play.
  • Seven Terriers earned All-Patriot League awards last Friday (Nov. 1). Juniors Giulianna Gianino and Margy Porta earned first team spots. Senior Morgan Fagan as well as juniors Mackenzie Stickelman and Helene Tyburczy garnered second team honors. Senior Allison Hanlon and freshman Bridget Carr were third team selections.
  • Gianino and Fagan were picked to the Academic All-Patriot League Team for the second straight season.
  • BU defeated Army West Point to cap the regular season last Wednesday (Oct. 30), 1-0.
  • Freshman Olivia Avellar tallied her first career goal in the 83rd minute to break the deadlock.
  • Carr made two saves in her third shutout of the season.
  • With Avellar's goal, BU has had 10 different goal scorers in 2024. Seventeen have accrued at least one point for the second consecutive season.
  • A win or a tie where BU advances on penalty kicks would send the Terriers to their seventh Patriot League championship game appearance.
  • Overall, BU is 11-5-3 all-time in the Patriot League Tournament, winning championships in 2013, 2014, 2015, and 2018.
  • The Terriers are 7-2-1 when hosting a Patriot League Tournament match. 
SCOUTING ARMY WEST POINT
  • Hannah Pohlidal scored the game-winning goal for Army West Point with six minutes remaining in the quarterfinal win over the Mids.
  • Sage Strohman was named the Patriot League Goalkeeper of the Year, while Bella Conti was tabbed as the Rookie of the Year.
  • Army had seven All-Patriot League honorees; Strohman and Kaelan Bradley appeared on the first team. Keira Vesy, Brigid Duffy, and Grace Pohlidal were second team recipients. Conti and Cami Silvestro were named to the third team.
  • The Black Knights last won the Patriot League Championship in 2011.
  • Overall, Army is 17-17-4 in the Patriot League Tournament.
SERIES HISTORY
  • Thursday marks the 16th all-time meeting between BU and Army West Point in a series that began in 1996.
  • By virtue of BU's 1-0 win last week, the Terriers sport a 10-3-2 edge in the rivalry.
  • The Terriers and Black Knights have met twice in the Patriot League Tournament, both in semifinal matches.
  • BU won both of those contests in 2018 and 2021 at Nickerson Field, 3-0 and 1-0, respectively.
LOOKING AHEAD
  • The winner of Thursday's game advances to the Patriot League Championship on Sunday (Nov. 10) at 12:30 p.m. The match will air on CBS Sports Network.
  • If BU wins and Loyola Maryland advances, the Terriers will host the final at Nickerson Field. If the Terriers win and Bucknell advances, BU will make the trip to Lewisburg, Pa.
