D'Alto, Perfetto Set New Program Records in 18-8 Win over Vermont

BOSTON - Graduate students Vince D'Alto and Louis Perfetto of the Boston University men's lacrosse team combined for 11 goals and six assists en route to setting new program records during the No. 18 Terriers' 18-8 win over Vermont on Saturday at in their home opener at Nickerson Field.

D'Alto became the program's all-time leading point producer, breaking the previous record of 215 set by Timmy Ley last season. D'Alto matched his and Ley's single-game program record of seven goals and also added two assists to finish with nine points. Perfetto's second of four assists on the day set a new program standard of 103 career assists. He also notched four goals to finish the afternoon with eight points, which matches a career high. D'Alto now has 220 points (136g, 84a) while Perfetto is at 196 points (91g, 105a). When Perfetto scores his 100th career goal and D'Alto records his 100th career assist, they will be the first players in program history to reach both 100 goals and 100 assists.

BU improved to 2-0 on the season thanks in part to a seven-goal second quarter that gave the Terriers a 12-5 halftime lead. Junior Brenden Kelly scored a career-best three goals while graduate student Thomas Niedringhaus tallied twice. Senior Tommy Bourque matched his career high with two assists while graduate student Jake Cates also matched his career high with three helpers. Sophomore Jimmy Kohr and senior Tommy Jepson both scored their first goals of the season while junior Jimmy O'Connell and senior James Corcoran each notched their first assists of the year.

BU was impressive on the ride on Saturday, forcing a program-record 21 of Vermont's 27 turnovers and holding them to a 15-of-23 mark in the clearing game. The Terriers also cleared the ball efficiently, going 23-of-25, including 8-for-8 in the second half. The Terriers also won the ground ball battle, 40-32, and attempted 57 shots to just 23 for Vermont.

Defensively, junior Trey Brown and graduate student Patrick Morrison each recorded four caused turnovers, with Brown also leading the Terriers with four ground balls. Sophomore Connor Kehm set new career highs with three ground balls and three caused turnovers while Dane DeGoler added two caused turnovers and three ground balls. Junior goalkeeper Will Barnes made 10 saves in 53:44 of work to earn the win before being relieved by classmate Michael Allieri for the final 6:16.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Kelly opened the scoring with 12:57 left in the opening quarter before Perfetto doubled the lead just 1:13 later.
  • D'Alto extended the lead to 3-0 at 7:41 before Tristan Whitaker got UVM on the board at 5:27.
  • Perfetto set the assists record just 17 seconds later. After Cates shot the ball wide on a clear, Perfetto backed it up to maintain possession and quickly found a wide-open Kelly off the restart for the goal.
  • Vernont scored twice in a span of 2:01 to make it a 4-3 game, but a great dodge and finish by Niedringhaus with 28 seconds to go gave the Terriers a 5-3 lead after 15 minutes.
  • BU scored three times in a span of 57 seconds to grab an 8-3 lead with 12:14 to go. D'Alto tallied two of the goals and assisted on Kelly's third of the game as part of that outburst, which included two goals in three seconds thanks to UVM going over the limit on faceoff violations.
  • Perfetto needed just 29 seconds to answer a Vermont goal with his second strike of the day to make it a 9-4 game at 11:17 of the second quarter.
  • D'Alto's record-setting point came on his goal at 8:36 of the second off a feed from Cates.
  • Perfetto and D'Alto each added one more goal apiece in the second half to help BU take a 12-5 lead into the break.
  • BU carried an EMO into the third quarter and Kohr cashed in at 14:38 to push the lead to 13-5.
  • The teams traded goals to end the third quarter, with Jepson scoring at the 10:46 mark.
  • Neither team found the back of the net for the final 7:33 of the third, but in the fourth Vermont needed just 35 seconds to score its eighth and final goal of the game.
  • Niedringhaus, Perfetto and D'Alto combined for the final four goals of the game, with D'Alto closing the scoring with 6:16 on the clock.
