PROVIDENCE, R.I. - Senior
Nick Zabaneh and graduate student
Sam Stevens each scored for the No. 3 Boston University men's ice hockey team as the Terriers skated to a 2-2 tie at No. 10/11 Providence on Friday night at Schneider Arena.
Providence (16-9-3, 9-6-3 HE) won the shootout against BU (19-8-2, 13-4-2 HE) and gained the extra point in the Hockey East standings. Junior
Mathieu Caron was sharp all night for the Terriers, making 35 saves and allowing just one even-strength goal. Freshman
Jack Harvey and junior
Jack Hughes each assisted on Stevens' goal while Zabaneh's fourth goal of the season was an unassisted, shorthanded strike.
BU extended its unbeaten streak against Providence to seven games (6-0-1).
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Providence opened the scoring just 4:34 into the proceedings.
- Zabaneh evened the score with a spectacular individual effort on the penalty kill. Providence tried to go d-to-d and Zabaneh intercepted the pass out of midair. He then won the race to the puck and skated in alone on Philip Svedebäck before making a move and lifting a backhander over the Friar netminder.
- BU took its first lead of the game at the 11:30 mark of the second stanza. Hughes and Harvey combined to force a turnover deep in the Providence zone, with Harvey eventually getting the puck to Stevens in front. Stevens slid the puck through Svedebäck's five-hole for his seventh goal of the season.
- The Friars answered with a power-play goal at 14:52 of the second to send the teams to the third even at 2-2.
- Neither team broke through in the third period, with Caron making two terrific saves as Providence looked to capitalize on a shorthanded faceoff in the BU zone.
- The Terriers controlled the puck for the majority of overtime. Peterson had a great point-blank chance on Svedebäck after Zabaneh forced a turnover at the PC blue line, but Svedebäck turned him aside.
- Providence scored the lone goal in the shootout, ending matters in the third and final round to claim the extra point in the league standings.
GAME NOTES
- BU has notched at least one point in five straight league games and is now 1-1 in shootouts this season.

- Harvey pushed his point streak to three games (2g, 2a) and he has now notched a point in four of the last five games.
