Women's Ice Hockey Falls to Holy Cross in Hockey East Tournament, 4-2

BOSTON - The Boston University women's ice hockey team had its season come to an end on Wednesday evening as the seventh-seeded Terriers were upset by 10th-seeded Holy Cross, 4-2, in the opening round of the Hockey East tournament at Walter Brown Arena.

A back-and-forth first period saw the teams enter the first intermission tied 2-2 but the visitors broke that deadlock in the second before adding a late insurance goal despite the Terriers holding a

Senior defenders Tamara Giaquinto and Julia Shaunessy provided the goals for the Terriers, who finish with a record of 14-18-3.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Lane Lewis redirected a Carmen Elliott shot just 29 seconds into the game to give Holy Cross a 1-0 lead.
  • Giaquinto evened the score with a power-play strike at the 7:02 mark thanks to assists from the Welcke sisters. Luisa dished the puck to Lilli, who then slid the puck across the zone to Giaquinto at the bottom of the left circle for a one-timer that beat Madison Beck.
  • Shaunessy's first goal of the season gave the Terriers a 2-1 lead with just 1:55 to go in the opening period. After a great shift by Vote and the Welckes, Giaquinto kept the play alive in below the goal line before sliding it back for FitzGerald, who had just come on the ice. FitzGerald dished it to Shaunessy, who herself was fresh off the bench. Shaunessy collected the pass at the top of the zone and fired the puck past Beck.
  • The Crusaders answered with less than 30 seconds remaining in the first, however, to tie the game at 2-2, before scoring the lone goal of the third to take a 3-2 lead after 40 minutes.
  • Millie Sirum provided an insurance goal for Holy Cross with 3:53 left to play.
  • The Terriers pulled Callie Shanahan in favor of an extra attacker for the final minutes but were unable to get another puck past Beck.
