Terriers Defeated by No. 25 Brown

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Boston University women's lacrosse team dropped a 21-9 result to No. 25 Brown on Saturday afternoon. 
 
Brown built an early 2-0 lead, but BU was quick to tie the game 2-2. The Bears began to pull ahead and, despite multiple back and forth scoring runs through the first half, the Terriers could not catch up to their Ivy League foes. Brown pulled further ahead in the second half and BU added two, resulting in the 21-9 loss. 
 
Seven Terriers found the back of the net in the loss. Junior Abby Cotraro led BU with three of her own, two of which came in the first quarter. Juniors Hannah Tillier and Avery Jones, sophomores Elle Stevenson and Samantha Simpson and freshmen Tessa Geddes and Reilly Walsh each scored once in the game. Tillier and Cotraro led BU in points with three each.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Brown went up 2-0 early in the opening frame.
  • BU's first goal of the game came when Tillier passed to Cotraro who scored on a five-hole shot.
  • After causing a turnover in the defensive end, BU marched down the field and Tillier found Cotraro again in front of the net to tie the game 2-2.
  • Brown went on to score three goals within a minute to go up 5-2 with 4:10 to go in the first.
  • The Bears added three unanswered goals to end the first quarter leading 8-2.
  • Brown opened the scoring in the second quarter with its ninth of the game.
  • Tillier earned a free position chance and found the back of the net for BU's third goal of the day.
  • Brown then answered to go up 10-3.
  • Senior Ellen Monahan caused a crucial turnover which allowed Geddes to charge the net to score on a woman-up opportunity.
  • Just over a minute later, Stevenson fired off a shot from a sharp angle to give BU its fifth goal.
  • Brown added two unanswered goals to lead 12-5 with 8:36 to go in the half.
  • Jones responded as she took a pass from Walsh and dodged multiple defenders to make it 12-6.
  • After Brown went up 13-6 and held that lead for four minutes, Walsh scored her first of the day.
  • Brown added two more as BU trailed 15-7 at the half. 
  • The Bears brought their momentum into the second half to score five unanswered goals in the third quarter.
  • Cotraro started the scoring in the fourth quarter to complete her hat trick performance.
  • Simpson made her away around a few defenders and scored her first career goal from the 8-meter arch.
  • Brown scored once more as time expired to bring the final score to Brown 21, BU 9.
 
GAME NOTES
  • BU went 13-for-16 on the clear and Brown went 18-for-20.
  • Brown outshot BU 29 to 16.
  • BU scooped up 14 ground balls.
  • BU caused seven turnovers to Brown's eight.
  • Freshman goalkeeper Natalie Aiosa made eight saves in net.
  • The last time BU was held to nine goals against Brown was in 2010.

  • BU turns its focus to Patriot League play when it heads to Bucknell on Saturday, March 16.
