Women’s Soccer to Open Patriot League Play at Loyola Maryland

September 20, 2024

BOSTON – The Boston University women's soccer program begins its 12th season of Patriot League action on Saturday (Sept. 21) as it travels to Loyola Maryland. Opening kick is set for 12 p.m.

Both Terrier soccer teams will square off against the Greyhounds on Saturday, with the BU men's soccer team following the women's match at 3 p.m.

BU (0-6-2) looks to reach the Patriot League Tournament for the fifth-consecutive season. The Terriers enter the conference slate with a 63-19-12 Patriot League record in the regular season.

Loyola Maryland (4-2-2) is wrapping up a five-game homestand on Saturday. The Greyhounds are 2-0-2 so far during that stretch, allowing just three goals.

TERRIER TIDBITS
  • BU last played on Sunday (Sept. 15), falling to Rhode Island on the road, 3-2.
  • Juniors Giulianna Gianino (penalty kick goal in the 22nd minute) and Margy Porta (48th minute) supplied the scoring for the Terriers.
  • Freshman Bridget Carr entered the match in the second half and made two saves between the posts.
  • At 33 career points, Gianino is one point shy of matching Abigail McNulty '24 and Megan McGoldrick '14 for 24th place on BU's all-time scoring list.
  • Gianino, Porta, and classmate Shayla Brown have supplied all of BU's goals this year.
  • Since the start of last season, the Terrier Class of 2026 has accounted for 34 of the team's 38 tallies, good for over 89 percent.
  • As a Patriot League member, BU is 6-4-1 in its conference openers.
  • Though Saturday is the second time in three seasons the Terriers ignite conference play on the road, BU has done so just twice since the start of 2019.
SCOUTING LOYOLA MARYLAND
  • The Greyhounds are 4-2-2 on the campaign, most recently defeating unbeaten Monmouth 1-0 on Sept. 15.
  • Two-time Patriot League Offensive Player of the Week Baylee DeSmit paces the conference with six goals, four game-winning strikes, and 14 points.
  • Loyola Maryland has conceded just six goals in 10 matches, with Brigid Mulholland leading the league with her .846 save percentage.
  • The Greyhounds were projected to finish fourth, right behind BU, in the Patriot League preseason poll. DeSmit garnered Preseason Offensive Player of the Year recognition.
  • In 2023, Loyola Maryland posted an 11-6 record, going 6-3 in conference play to earn the third seed in the Patriot League Tournament and reach the quarterfinals.
SERIES HISTORY
  • Saturday marks the 15th all-time meeting between BU and Loyola Maryland that started in 2009.
  • The Terriers sport a 9-2-3 edge in the rivalry, and are 3-1-1 on the road in that stretch.
  • The Greyhounds won last year's meeting in Boston, 1-0 on Sept. 16, 2023, thanks to Chloe Kuminkoski's tally in the 15th minute.
  • Prior to that contest, BU was unbeaten in nine-straight matches.
  • The last battle in Baltimore was on Oct. 22, 2022. The Terriers scored the first three goals of the game en route to a 3-1 triumph.
LOOKING AHEAD
  • BU will conclude its four-game road swing on Wednesday (Sept. 25), visiting Colgate. Opening kick is scheduled for 6 p.m.
