HAMILTON, N.Y. – Unable to keep pace with Colgate's hot 3-point shooting, the Boston University men's basketball team fell on the road to the defending Patriot League champions, 87-50, on Saturday afternoon.
The Raiders (6-11, 3-1 PL) claimed their fifth home victory by hitting their first seven attempts from behind the arc and finishing with a 13-5 advantage in made 3-pointers, as the Terriers (8-9, 2-2 PL) saw their two-game win streak snapped.
Sophomore
Michael McNair led BU with 12 points and six rebounds, while senior
Malcolm Chimezie also finished in double figures at 10 points alongside six boards. The Terriers shot 39.6 percent from the field and committed their second most turnovers of the season at 19 total.
Five Raiders finished in double figures with Jeff Woodward totaling 18 points, seven assists and five rebounds. Both Kyle Carlesimo and Parker Jones recorded 12 points apiece, while Nicolas Louis-Jacques and Chandler Baker matched each other's 11-point performance. Shooting 50.8 percent on the day and 48.1 percent in 3-point territory, Colgate outscored BU off turnovers (25-8), in the paint (36-26) and in second-chance opportunities (16-11).
HOW IT HAPPENED
- After Louis-Jacques hit a 3-pointer to start the game, Chimezie hit back-to-back layups helped by sophomore Kyrone Alexander's steal.
- Woodward though responded with a layup of his own and a pair of free throws to grab the lead for good.
- Holding a 7-6 lead, the Raiders scored 10 straight points as part of a 23-5 run featuring four 3-pointers, including Baker's trey at 7:59.
- Junior Nico Nobili flushed one of his own a minute later to pull within 16 (32-16), but BU would never get any closer, as Colgate built on their lead to enter the locker room ahead, 53-25.
- McNair followed Alexander's layup with a 3-pointer and layup to help BU have an opportunity to cut the deficit below 20 points early in the second half.
- However, after missing their first five field goal attempts, Colgate regained control of the game behind Woodward's back-to-back layups en route to the victory.
GAME NOTES
- McNair tied his previous best of three straight games with double-digit points after posting a combined 37 points in the two home wins against American and Army West Point.
- Shooting 3-of-7 in 3-point territory, McNair has now hit multiple 3-pointers in 11 of the last 12 games.
- Colgate's 13 3-pointers were one shy of the most allowed by the Terriers in a Patriot League game after the Raiders (2016) and Lehigh (2018) both drained 14 apiece.
- The Raiders won their sixth straight meeting against BU to improve to 35-30 all-time in the series.
UP NEXT
- BU will return home to host Lehigh on Wednesday (Jan. 15), at 6 p.m., in a rematch of last year's OT PL semifinal heartbreaker (84-79) won by the Mountain Hawks.
- In the regular season, BU won, 72-71, at home and 64-62 OT on the road.
