Terriers Drop Road Contest at No. 12 Northeastern

BOSTON – The Boston University women's ice hockey team (1-7-0, 1-2-0 HE) fell to No. 12 Northeastern (6-2-0, 3-0-0 HE) in a 7-3 outcome on Saturday afternoon at Matthews Arena.
 
Northeastern opened the scoring a little over five minutes into the game before adding another goal before the close of the first frame to a 2-0 lead. The Huskies scored two additional unanswered goals in the second, one of which came on a power play, before BU responded.
 
After roughing calls on both BU and Northeastern, The Terriers found the back of the net during 4-on-4 play before adding another goal a few minutes later to cut into Northeastern's lead, 4-2, before the end of the second. Northeastern then scored on the power play twice in the third frame to go up 6-2. BU added another goal in the final minutes and pulled its netminder but could not catch up to Northeastern's lead. The Huskies scored an empty net goal in the final 30 seconds to defeat BU, 7-3.
 
Seniors Sydney Healey and Clara Yuhn and junior Greta Henderson scored for BU. Graduate student Michelle Pasiechnyk, sophomore Kaileigh Quigg and seniors Riley Walsh and Lilli Welcke all registered assists. Both junior Mari Pietersen and Pasiechnyk played net, with Pietersen making 14 saves through the first 28:59 and Pasiechnyk making 10.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • At 4:40 in the first, BU was called for too many players on the ice.
  • Northeastern scored 37 seconds into the power play to take a 1-0 lead.
  • The Huskies were called for tripping with 11:09 to play in the opening frame.
  • BU maintained possession on the attacking end of the ice for most of the power play but did not score.
  • Northeastern collected the puck at the BU blue line and skated to the near post and scored to take a 2-0 lead at 18:43.
  • BU went to the box for cross checking with 59.5 seconds left in the frame.
  • With two seconds left to play in the first, Northeastern was called for hooking.
  • The 4-on-4 continued for 1:01 in the second frame and was followed by 57 seconds of a BU power play.
  • The score remained unchanged through the penalties.
  • Northeastern went to the box for slashing at 5:19 in the second and successfully killed the penalty.
  • BU was called for boarding at 8:01 and Northeastern capitalized with a power-play goal 23 seconds into the advantage to build to a 3-0 lead.
  • The Huskies then scored their fourth goal with 11:01 to play in the middle stanza.
  • Pasiechnyk entered the net following the goal.
  • BU and Northeastern were both called for roughing at the 9:30 mark, and BU was served a 10-minute misconduct for roughing at the same time.
  • During 4-on-4 play, Pasiechnyk sent the puck up the ice, where S. Healey broke away in the neutral zone and found the back of the net to cut into Northeastern's lead, 4-1, at the 12:24 mark.
  • BU kept its momentum when Henderson sent a rebound into the net to score her first goal as a Terrier at 14:18. She was assisted by Quigg and Walsh.
  • Northeastern continued to lead, 4-2, headed into the third period.
  • With 11:52 to go in the third, BU was assessed a five-minute major penalty for a hit from behind.
  • Northeastern added two goals through the power play to build to a 6-2 lead.
  • At the 18:22 mark, Li. Welcke won a faceoff and sent the puck to Yuhn, who scored from the far side of the circle.
  • The Terriers then pulled Pasiechnyk from the posts.
  • Northeastern scored an empty net goal in the final minute of play to bring the final score to Northeastern 7, BU 2.
 
GAME NOTES
  • The Huskies narrowly outshot the Terriers, 31 to 28.
  • BU won 21 faceoffs while Northeastern won 27.
  • Northeastern was 4-for-6 on the power play while BU was 0-for-4.

  • BU will travel to Maine for two games on Friday, Nov. 7 and Saturday, Nov. 8.
