HOW IT HAPPENEDÂ
- BU's defenders got to work early on, blocking three Merrimack shots in a span of 24 seconds to open the first period. Â
- Midway through the frame, the Terrier power play saw four minutes of ice time, generating two shots on net but failing to convert.
- On the second man-advantage, Yegorov came up with a big shorthanded stop at 9:46 on a Warrior breakaway attempt.Â
- Shortly after BU's power play time expired, Morello opened the scoring for the Terriers at 11:04. Merrill got the play started, scooping the puck up at his goal line and breaking into the offensive zone before dishing the rubber to McNelis in the left circle. With Morello crashing the net, McNelis found his linemate for the tip-in past Merrimack's Max Lundgren (18 saves).Â
- Merrimack responded with two goals of its own at 14:40 and 17:53 to close out the opening frame with a 2-1 lead.
- The Terrier penalty kill faced its first test to start the middle period and denied the Warriors a shot on target
- BU nearly found the equalizer at 12:41, but the goal was waved off. After a missed Merrimack shot, McNelis was off to the races for a breakaway chance but was knocked to the ice and collided with the net before he could get the shot off. Sophomore Brandon Svoboda was ready and his shot crossed the goal line, but the goal was called off due to the puck entering the net while it was off its moorings.Â
- The Warriors edged the Terriers in second-period shots, 6-5, but neither team scored.
- After successfully killing off two minor penalties to start the final frame, BU surged with five consecutive shots starting at 6:02, including two on target.
- Hutson, reigning National Defender of the Month, cleanly poked the puck away to stave off a Merrimack breakaway shot at 13:20.
- Murtagh tied the contest, 2-2, at 16:30 in the third with a nifty toe drag move. Celebrini collected the puck in the neutral zone and whizzed a cross-ice, backhanded pass to Murtagh, who dangled the rubber and flung it past Lundgren.
- Yegorov flashed the leather for a showstopping glove save to fire up the home crowd with seven seconds remaining in regulation.Â
- Through 60 minutes, the game remained deadlocked at two goals apiece and headed to a 5-minute, 3-on-3 overtime period.
- Hutson scored the game-winner 21 seconds into overtime, using a Merrimack defender as a screen and cleanly lifting the puck over Lundgren's glove.Â
- BU collected its 100th victory over Merrimack, improving its head-to-head record to 100-26-8.Â
- The Terrier penalty kill stayed hot, going a perfect 5-for-5 and improving to 18-for-19 in its last four games.Â
- Hutson now has six game-winners throughout his collegiate career, and this is his first overtime winner.
- Notching the game-winning goal, Hutson extended his active point streak to five games, with 8 points (two goals, six assists) over that stretch.
- With an assist on Morello's goal, Merrill now has points in three straight contests.Â
- BU and Merrimack will conclude their home-and-home series on Saturday night (Nov. 8) in North Andover at Lawler Arena.Â
- Puck drop is scheduled for 6 p.m.
