BOSTON - Junior Quinn Hutson scored his 18th goal of the season but the No. 9/8 Boston University men's ice hockey team fell to Northeastern, 5-1, on Friday night at Agganis Arena.
Northeastern (11-15-3, 6-10-3 HE) scored a power-play goal to take a 1-0 lead after one period and then moved ahead, 3-0, before Hutson brought BU (17-12-1, 11-8-1 HE) within two. However, Northeastern quickly answered to make it 4-1 before tacking on another goal early in the third period.
Freshman Cole Hutson and sophomore Gavin McCarthy assisted on Hutson's strike.
HOW IT HAPPENEDÂ
- The Terriers outshot the Huskies, 9-4, in the first frame, but NU opened the scoring on a 4-on-3 power play at 14:17.
- Northeastern then doubled its lead at 3:52 of the second stanza.
- Senior Matt Copponi had BU's best chance of the period at 9:35 on a point-blank rebound off a McCarthy bid, but Cameron Whitehead (25 saves) closed the door on back-to-back Terrier shots.Â
- Then, the Huskies took a 3-0 lead at 11:19 on their second man advantage of the contest.Â
- Northeastern was awarded a penalty shot soon after at 12:38, but freshman Mikhail Yegorov stood tall to keep the Terriers within striking distance.
- Quinn scored during 4-on-4 play with 2:17 remaining in the middle frame. Cole showed patience, deking around two Northeastern defenders in the Huskies' end before finding his older brother in the slot for the finish.Â
- However, Northeastern responded 12 seconds later to regain its three goal lead before adding a fifth tally 26 seconds into the final frame to seal the game.Â
GAME NOTESÂ
- Quinn Hutson continues to lead the Terriers in goals and has now matched last year's career-best total of 18.
- Hutson's goal also served as his career-best 37th point of the year after he reached 36 points a year ago.
- Cole Hutson's 22nd assist of the year moved him to the 30-point plateau.
- He is the fourth Hockey East freshman defender since at least 2002-03 to record 30 points in his debut season.
