BOSTON – In a morning filled with challenging elements, the Boston University lightweight rowing team dropped a pair of races to MIT's openweight program on Saturday on the Charles River.
Overnight rain set up winds of 10 miles per hour and a slight cross-tailwind, but a heavy chop was steady throughout the day. All crews had floating starts to begin races as well. Originally scheduled for three races, the Varsity 4+ race was scratched due to the water conditions, leaving the Varsity 8+ and Second Varsity 8+ races on the docket.
In the Varsity 8+, the Terriers, coxed by
Mayberry Mark and stroked by
Mia Seibert, mounted a furious comeback in the final 500 meters after MIT built a lead in the opening half. In a tight finish, the Engineers came out on top at 6:22.9, less than a second in front of BU's 6:23.7.
The Second Varsity 8+, coxed by
Heather Shinn and stroked by
Rosa Beckert, held serve with MIT up to the Mass. Ave. Bridge following a challenging start, but the Engineers gradually expanded their lead to open water and were first across the line in 6:29.0, while BU clocked in at 6:39.2.
BU returns to the water on Sunday, April 6 when it faces Bates.
