BOSTON – A balanced effort supplied with three first half goals guided the Boston University women's soccer program to a 3-0, season-opening win over New Hampshire on Sunday (Aug. 17) at Nickerson Field.
After 30 minutes of scoreless action, BU (1-0) scored twice in a 3:23 span and added another on an own goal from UNH (0-1) before halftime to fuel its offensive output. The Terriers also limited the Wildcats to just one shot on goal on the defensive end.
Sophomore
Juliana Osterman totaled three points on a goal and an assist, while freshman
Georgia Prouty netted her first career tally. Senior
Susan Shobeiri recorded the shutout in her first collegiate start between the posts.
Six different Wildcats registered shots, while Sonja Zeepvat and Caroline Cohen combined for six saves in goal.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- BU had three opportunities to score near the ninth minute when Zeepvat made stops on shots from junior Ava Maguire and Gianino. After a corner, senior Helene Tyburczy's shot sailed over the crossbar.
- After coaxing a turnover in the Terriers' end, Abbi Maier rang a shot off the left post in the 15th minute. Moments later, a 19-yard free kick from Gianino zipped wide right on the other end.
- In the 31st minute, Gianino flicked a ball that UNH couldn't control, and Osterman tapped it to Prouty in transition. The rookie beat Zeepvat to break the ice.
- Osterman added her goal after spinning away from a marker following Schwinn-Clanton's feed, delivering a right-footed strike into the lower-right corner for a 2-0 Terrier lead in the 35th minute.
- The Terriers entered the locker room up 3-0 after a pass from UNH's back line intended for Zeepvat went wide. Zeepvat stumbled as the ball trickled into the Wildcats' net in the 44th minute.
- In the 54th minute, BU generated a corner kick that got loose inside the 6-yard box before Cohen, who entered in goal for UNH in the second half, snagged. The Wildcats worked quickly in transition, but freshman defender Nina Tzouganatos caused a takeaway to prevent a 1-on-1 scoring opportunity.
- After two chances from junior Samantha Aronson were denied, the Wildcats appeared to score in the 58th minute, the side judge ruled offside at the last moment.
- Shobeiri collected her first career save in the 88th minute, leaping to her right to turn away Angel Deluhery's shot.
