Men's Soccer Triumphs at No. 24 Bucknell, 3-2

LEWISBURG, Pa. – Overcoming a pair of one-goal deficits and grabbing the lead for good in the 44th minute on freshman Sebastian Otero's successful strike, the Boston University men's soccer team claimed a thrilling 3-2 victory at No. 24 Bucknell Saturday afternoon.

With their first win over a ranked team since 2022, the Terriers (5-3-0, 2-1-0 PL) claimed three valuable points in conference play, as the Bison (5-2-1, 1-1-1 PL) saw their four-game unbeaten streak snapped.

Sophomore Pharis Petrica, senior Ethan Gill and Otero all netted their second goals of the season in the first half, while senior Sheraz Saadat recorded a career-high nine saves to help BU earn its fourth straight victory against Bucknell. Petrica assisted on Gill's score and junior Lapo Romieri helped set up Otero's game winner to move into a tie at seven points apiece.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Bucknell jumped on the scoreboard first at 2:36 when Zane Domsohn took a low shot from the top of the box that deflected off the foot of a BU defender and took a high bounce toward the right post.
  • Petrica scored the Terriers' first equalizer at 11:29 when he intercepted a pass at midfield and quickly took an impressive shot that found the Bison keeper, Freddie Lapworth, too far up away from the goal.
  • Two minutes later, Jack Lucas retook the lead for Bucknell on a 25-yard free kick that deflected off the BU wall and slipped under the crossbar.
  • The Bison remained on the attack earning a pair of corners and took a pair of shots with Saadat stopping Domsohn's attempt at 23:07.
  • During the 29th minute, Petrica collected a loose ball and made a couple of sharp moves through a couple of Bison defenders to find Gill, who fired a shot from the right side of the box toward the far post to tie the game.
  • One minute later, Saadat saved two shots and added another save at 37:00 to keep the game tied.
  • With only about 70 seconds left in the first half, junior Lapo Romieri sent a cross into the box to Otero, who made a couple of steps around a defender and duplicated Gill's efforts by blasting an eight-yard shot inside the left post.
  • Senior Diego Rived and classmate Damola Salami both forced Lapworth to make a save at 49:09 and 60:05, respectively.
  • Saadat followed with four more of his saves, including one just before the buzzer sounded to seal the victory.
GAME NOTES
  • Petrica, Gill and Otero all scored their second goals of the season to join Romieri and junior Andrea Di Blasio in a tie for the team lead.
  • Both Petrica and Romieri earned their team-leading third assists to move into a tie at a team-high seven points (2g,3a).
  • Bucknell posted an 18-8 advantage in shots and finished with a 5-1 lead in corner kicks.
  • BU improved to 5-3-6 all-time in the series with its fourth straight victory.
LOOKING AHEAD
  • BU will wrap up the road trip at Harvard on Tuesday (Sept. 30) with a 7 p.m. start.
  • The Crimson are riding a four-game unbeaten streak in the series after the two squads battled to a 1-1 draw each of the last two seasons.
  • BU last claimed a victory in 2019 at home (2-0) and will try to snap a five-game winless streak (0-3-2) on the road with the last win occurring in 2011 (2-1).
