Terriers Open Home Slate With 3-1 Victory Over Brown

BOSTON – Highlighted by three-point performances from juniors Andrea Di Blasio and Lapo Romieri, the Boston University men's soccer team opened the home schedule with a 3-1 victory over Brown Friday night.

Carrying momentum from last Friday's 5-1 win at Charleston, the Terriers improve to 3-1, as the Bears (2-1) suffered their first loss of the season. All three BU goals came in the second half with Romieri striking first 40 seconds after taking the field for the first time and then assisting on freshman Austin Mobray's goal in the 49th minute.

The preseason All-Patriot League honoree Di Blasio set up Romieri's second goal of the season for the 1-0 lead and finished off sophomore Pharis Petrica's service pass into the box at 64:36 for his first goal. The Bears applied pressure on BU with a successful 53rd-minute free kick but could not continue the rally thanks to senior Ben Alexander's four saves.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Brown's Lorenzo Brown Amaral challenged the BU backline early with a pair of shots, including one that led to the Terriers clearing the game's first corner kick at 5:10.
  • Seniors Diego Rived and Ethan Gill both forced saves from keeper Henrik Weiper in the 32nd and 34th minutes, respectively, with the Bears able to defend against the ensuing corner kicks.
  • Needing little time in the second half to break the scoreless deadlock, Di Blasio sent the ball toward the upper left corner of the box to Romieri, who quickly sent a low angled shot toward the right post for the 1-0 advantage at 45:40.
  • Weiper stopped sophomore Jack Grossman's shot attempt one minute later but was unable to put a hand on BU's next one at 48:36.
  • Romieri moved through a pair of Brown defenders to get to the top of the box and found Mobray on the left side with the rookie next moving a few yards closer and lofting the ball toward the upper right corner of the net for the 2-0 advantage.
  • After Alexander earned his first save at 50:28, the Bears cut their deficit in half two minutes later, as Mads Stistrup Petersen found the back of the net with a 25-yard free kick.
  • Finishing with six shots, Aamaral put another on target at 59:53, but again Alexander was in position for the save to maintain the one-goal advantage.
  • BU added the insurance goal in the 65th minute with Petrica sending a pass from in front of the BU bench toward the middle of the box for Di Blasio to pounce on for a hard grounder and move ahead, 3-1.
  • Alexander added a pair of saves to seal the victory over the Bears.
GAME NOTES
  • Romieri became the first Terrier to score multiple goals this season and now leads BU in points at five (2g,1a).
  • With both Di Blasio and Mobray finding the back of the net for the first time, BU now has seven Terriers who have scored a goal this year. Four have earned at least one goal and one assist so far.
  • Named PL Midfielder of the Week on Monday, Petrica is now tied for the team lead with Mobray at two assists apiece.
  • BU's three goals scored mark the most in a home opener since the Terriers blanked Providence, 3-0, in 2009.
  • The eight combined goals earned over the last two contests mark the most for BU since earning identical 4-0 victories vs. Binghamton and UAlbany in 2010.
  • BU finished with a 13-10 advantage in shots with Weiper matching Alexander's four saves. The Bears held a 5-3 edge in corners.
  • The Terriers snapped a four-game winless streak (0-3-1) against Brown after pulling out a 2-0 home win in 2016.
UP NEXT
  • The Terriers will hit the road again and begin Patriot League play at Army West Point on Saturday, Sept. 13, with a 6 p.m. start time.
  • BU has won each of the last two years en route to the conference regular season title.
  • Facing a 1-0 deficit entering the second half, BU scored the next three goals at home last season after earning a 2-0 road victory in 2023.
