Terrier Hockey Team Heads West for Thanksgiving

November 22, 2000

The Terrier hockey team, hoping to break its four-game losing streak, heads to Colorado this weekend for a game at the University Denver on Friday (Nov. 24) and at Colorado College on Saturday (Nov. 25).

HOPE TO END FOUR-GAME LOSING STREAK: The Terriers come into this weekend's series hoping to end a four-game losing streak. Their most recent setback was a 4-3 loss to Harvard on Tuesday nightB.U. did break out of a three-game goal-scoring drought by scoring three times against the Crimson. In the three previous games, the Terriers scored a total of four goals. In each of those three games, B.U. did not score a goal in the third period. Against, Harvard, they scored twice in the game's final 20 minutesAn interesting sidelight of the game was that all seven goals were scored on the power play, and seven different players scored the goalsThe Terriers are winless since they shut out Merrimack, 3-0, on November 4th. During the ensuing four games, B.U. has been outscored, 14-7. Junior Dan Cavanaugh is the team's leading scorer during this four-game losing streak with 2-2-4. Junior Mike Pandolfo is tied with Cavanaugh with a team-leading 2 goals, while he also has an assist for 3 points. Sophomore Freddy Meyer (0-3-3) also has 3 points in the last 4 gamesFreshman Sean Fields is 0-2-0 in the net with a 3.05 GAA and an .880 save percentage, while junior Jason Tapp is also 0-2-0. He has a 4.02 GAA and an .822 save percentageOne of the bright spots during this stretch is the Terriers' power play. They have converted on 6-of-21 chances for a 28.6 percent efficiency. However, they have given up 6 power play goals in 20 chances for a 30.0 percent efficiencyThe Terriers have outshot their opponents in the past 4 games, 111 to 95. But, B.U. has scored just 7 goals (0.63 shot percentage), while the opponents have scored 14 goals (.147 percentage).

LOOKING FOR FIRST ROAD WIN: The Terriers are 0-3-1 on the road this year. After tying Providence, 4-4, on October 28th, B.U. has lost on the road to Merrimack, 5-4, on November 3rd; to UMass/Lowell, 4-2, on November 10th, and to Northeastern, 4-1, on November 12thSenior Carl Corazzini leads the team in both goals with 3 and in points with 5 in the 4 road games. Junior Mike Pandolfo (2-2-4) and sophomore Mike Bussoli (1-3-4) are tied for second in scoringJunior Jason Tapp is 0-2-1 on the road with a 4.24 GAA and an .854 save percentage, while freshman Sean Fields has an 0-1-0 record with a 4.09 GAA and an .846 save percentageAs a team, the Terriers have been outscored 17-11 in the 4 road games. They have scored 11 goals on 116 shots (0.95 percentage) and allowed 17 goals on 115 shots (14.8 percent)They are 8-of-27 (29.6 percent) on the power play, while the opponents are 5-of-26 (19.2 percent).

EVEN STRENGTH ENIGMA: One of the biggest enigmas surrounding the Terriers this year has been their lack of scoring even strength goalsThrough the season's first 9 games, B.U. has scored 25 goals. Only 8 of them, though, have come when the team was at even strengthBy comparison, they have scored 15 power play goals, one shorthanded goal, and one empty netterThus, only 32 percent of the team's goals have come when it is at even strength.

CORAZZINI ENDS SCORING DROUGHT; CLOSEST TO 100: Senior Carl Corazzini scored the Terriers' final goal of the game on Tuesday night when he tallied on the power play at 17:51 of the third period. It marked his first goal in 4 games. His last previous game had come in the Terriers' 3-0 win over Merrimack on November 4thHe opened the season with 4 goals in the first 5 gamesHe comes into this weekend's series 51 goals and 39 assists for 90 points in 125 games. He is the closest Terrier to 100 career points on this year's roster. The next closest is senior Nick Gillis, who has 21 goals and 47 assists for 68 points in 118 games.

BUSS0LI NEARING PERSONAL BEST: Sophomore defenseman Mike Bussoli is just one point shy of tying his season total of a year ago. Through 9 games this year, Bussoli is tied for the team lead in assists with 5, while he is tied with sophomore defenseman John Cronin for 5th on the team in total points with 6. Each has 1-5-6Last year, Bussoli had 1-6-7 in 42 games.

EMERY BACK IN THE LINEUP: Senior defenseman Keith Emery returned to the Terrier lineup in Tuesday night's game against Harvard. Emery suffered a knee injury in the opening minutes of the Providence game on October 28th. The injury forced him to miss the next 5 games.

HEALTHIEST ALL SEASON: With Emery back in the lineup, the Terriers are the healthiest they have been all season. Sophomore defenseman Freddy Meyer missed the first 4 games as he was recovering from back surgery this past summer. Then, Emery sat out 4 games with his knee injury.

ALTERNATING GOALIES: In the last 4 games, Terrier head coach Jack Parker has alternated his goalies-junior Jason Tapp and freshman Sean Fields. Beginning with the UMass/Lowell game on November 10th, Fields started vs. UMass/Lowell and New Hampshire on November 17th. Tapp earned the nod vs. Northeastern on November 12th and vs. Harvard on November 21stIf that format holds true to form on this weekend's trip, Fields will start Friday night vs. Denver, and Tapp will be in goal on Saturday night vs. Colorado CollegeFields was the last goalie to start back-to-back games when he played vs. Merrimack on November 4th and vs. UMass/Lowell on November 10th.

AUSPICIOUS DEBUT FOR FIELDS: The freshman goalie made his collegiate debut vs. Merrimack on November 4th. He had 25 saves in the 3-0 win over the Warriors thus becoming the first Terrier goalie in 11 years to post a shutout in his debutFor his effort, he was named the Hockey East Co-Rookie of the Week. Since then, he had 22 saves in a 4-2 loss to UMass/Lowell on November 10th and then had 19 saves in a 2-1 setback against New Hampshire last Friday night (November 17th)He comes into this weekend with a 1-2-0 record along with a 2.02 GAA and a .920 save percentage.

ABOUT TAPP: The junior goalie's best performance this year came in a 3-1 win over Vermont on October 21st. En route to the victory, he had 28 savesHis season high in saves is 31, which came in the 4-4 overtime tie vs. Providence on October 28thHis career high in saves is 42 which came in a 3-1 win over Northeastern last February 25th.

TAPP BLANKED DENVER: Last season, the Terrier goalie posted his lone collegiate shutout vs. the Pioneers. He had 21 saves in the 4-0 win on November 26th at Brown Arena. He had 9 saves in the first period, one in the second, and 11 in the third.
