2001 CUMULATIVE STATISTICS
STORRS, Conn. - The Boston University field hockey team put pressure on the University of Connecticut Huskies in the second half but fell short in the end, dropping a 2-0 decision at UConn on Friday (Oct.19) evening. The Terriers finished a game without scoring for the first time this season.
Connecticut got on the board early, as Lauren Henderson scored on a direct corner just 2:46 into the game to put the Huskies up, 1-0. The two teams played a tight game, centered around the midfield, throughout the first half. The difference being B. U.'s inability to generate as many scoring opportunities as head coach Sally Starr thought the team could.
"We defended well throughout the game, but UConn was able to control the right side of the field and we didn't do a good job of controlling the right side," said Starr. "We did a good job of playing all 70 minutes with intensity, desire, and effort."
Connecticut (7-8, 1-3) doubled its advantage midway through the second half, as Mary Jo Malone tallied a goal at 15:57. The Terriers took seven shots in the second half, and put together a string of penalty corners and scoring chances late in the game, but could not cut into the Huskies' lead.
Connecticut had the advantage in total shots, 15-9, and penalty corners, 8-5. B. U.'s junior goalkeeper Susan Harrington made five saves. UConn's Maureen Butler stopped seven Terrier shots. Henderson had a game-high eight shots for the Huskies. The Terriers were led by junior captain Casey Holman, who took three shots.
Boston University (7-7, 6-2), which was in the "also receiving votes" category of the NFHCA poll this week, next play host to Princeton University, which is ranked seventh in this week's poll. The game will be played at Harvard's Jordan Field. Game time is 1 p.m.
