For the third time this year, Melissa Shulman is the America East Adidas Rookie of the Week.
Freshman Melissa Shulman (Huntington, NY), who scored the only goal in the Terriers' 1-0 women's soccer win over the University of Hartford last Friday night (October 26th), has been named the America East Adidas Rookie of the Week.
This marks the third time this year she has received the weekly award.
In the first week of the season, she scored the game-winning goal in the Terriers' 2-1 win over Stony Brook. Her second honor came after she scored both goals in the Terriers' 2-1 overtime come-from-behind win against the University of Maine on October 14th.
Her most recent award is a result of her goal that came at the 59:53 mark in last Friday night's win over the University of Hartford. The victory improved B.U.'s overall record to 11-5-1 and 9-0-1 in America East action. It also propelled the Terriers into sole possession of first play in the league standings.
With only one game left on the regular-season schedule-this Saturday night (November 3rd) at Northeastern, the Terriers could win their second straight America East regular-season title.
Last year, B.U. posted a 9-0-0 conference record during the regular-season and went on to defeat Towson and Hartford in the post-season tournament. From there, the Terriers advanced to the NCAA tournament where they defeated Holy Cross in the first round but lost to Dartmouth in the second round.
Since losing to Hartford, 1-0, on October 15, 1999, the Terriers have played 24 regular-season conference games and are 23-0-1 during that stretch. The only tie was a 0-0 double overtime battle against Hofstra this past September 21st.
With her goal against Hartford last Friday night, Shulman now has six goals this year. She is second on the team in both goals and points (12), trailing only sophomore Rebecca Beyer (Shawnee, KS), who has seven goals and 18 points.
What's more, she is 13th in the conference in points per game with 0.92.
"We have never had anyone here who is as great in the box as Melissa," Terrier head coach Nancy Feldman said after the Hartford win. "And, that includes 'D' (Enos, who is the Terriers' all-time leader in goals with 51 and in points with 121)). Melissa has great savvy in the box. She has a nose for the ball and knows how to get it on goal.
"When we recruited her, we knew she was a legitimate goal scorer, and she has been that for us this year."
