West Hartford, CT - Sherry Jordan had game-highs of 25 points and 12 rebounds to lead seventh-seeded Stony Brook to a 63-48 upset of second-seeded Boston University in the quarterfinal round of the America East Women's Basketball Championships at the Chase Family Arena on Thursday afternoon (March 7).
With the win in their first-ever America East Tournament, the Seawolves (15-13, 8-9) advance to the semifinals and play sixth-seeded New Hampshire, who upset third-seeded Binghamton, 58-53, in the quarterfinals.
B.U. got off to a rough start, shooting just 21.7 percent from the field and committing 16 turnovers in the first half. The Seawolves scored 20 points off the Terriers' turnovers and led 33-20 at halftime. Jordan had 10 points, eight rebounds and four steals before the break.
Sophomore guard Katie Terhune (Port Murray, NJ), who was held scoreless in the first half, got the Terriers back on track early in the second, scoring six points during a 13-4 B.U. run that closed the gap to 37-33 at 13:32. But Stony Brook answered, outscoring the Terriers 26-5 over the next 10 minutes to pull ahead, 63-38, with 3:12 remaining in the game.
Along with Jordan, Jill George had 11 points and six rebounds for the Seawolves.
On the game, B.U. (17-11, 10-7) committed 29 turnovers, tying the America East quarterfinal record. The Terriers had the advantage on the boards, outrebounding the Seawolves, 41-36, with sophomore forward Marisa Moseley (Longmeadow, MA) grabbing a team-high nine boards.
Terhune, who along with Jordan was an All-Conference First Team selection, scored a team-high nine points. It was just the third time this season Terhune was held to single-digit scoring. Freshman forward Larissa Parr (Eau Claire, WI) added eight points and six rebounds.
