Boston University's Pat Aufiero (Winchester) and Gregg Johnson (Windsor, CT) scored within a 10-second span of the second period and Mark Mullen (Dorchester) added an empty net goal with just 40 seconds to play, while Sean Fields (Edmonton, ALTA) turned aside 28-of-29 Boston College shots to lead the host Terrier hockey team to a 3-1 win in Hockey East action on Sunday afternoon (January 20th).
A Walter Brown Arena sellout crowd of 3806 watched as the Terriers completed a weekend sweep of their arch-rival Eagles. On Friday night, B.U. edged BC, 2-1, at Boston College.
For the nation's seventh-ranked Terriers, they improved their overall record to 14-5-2 and 8-3-2 in the league. In the meantime, the Eagles have lost four straight as their overall record is now 12-10-2 and 5-8-1 in the league.
After a scoreless first period, Aufiero put the Terriers ahead with his second goal of the season at 16:32 of the second period. Aufiero took the puck behind his own goal and rushed from end to end. He made a move around a BC defenseman, and as he was falling to the ice at the right faceoff circle, he let his shot go that beat BC goalie Tim Kelleher to the short side.
"That was a terrific play by Aufiero," Boston College hockey coach Jerry York said after the game. "There aren't many guys in this league who could go goal line to goal line like Pat did."
"I got the puck behind our net and started carrying it up ice," said Aufiero. "Normally, Coach (Jack Parker) tells the defensemen to dump the puck in when they get to the red line so that we won't be caught out of position.
"But, I had a lot of energy bringing the puck up, and I felt good," the senior defenseman said. "I made a move around the BC defenseman and I was about ready to fall down when I took the shot. I think that fooled Timmy (Kelleher)."
"A goal like Pat's really swung the momentum to our side," said Johnson.
If that was the case, then certainly Johnson's goal left the Eagles a bit shell- shocked.
On the ensuing faceoff after Aufiero's unassisted goal, Johnson got the puck back to defenseman Freddy Meyer (Sanbornville, NH). Meyer got the puck up to forward Kenny Magowan (Kelowna, BC), who, in turn, fed Johnson who was streaking toward the left faceoff circle. His shot from the circle beat Kelleher between his pads.
"I was just trying to put on net," said Johnson, whose fifth goal of the season came at 16:42. "It was certainly a big goal for us."
The Eagles came back at 8:18 of the third period when J.D. Forrest collected the rebound of a Jeff Giuliano shot. The puck was left in front by Fields and Forrest notched his seventh goal of the year. Ales Dolinar also earned an assist.
The Terriers clung to their one-goal lead until the 19:40 mark of the third period.
Kelleher, who finished the game with 23 saves, was pulled in favor of an extra skater as the Eagles tried to knot the score.
BC was threatening when Fields made a save and got the puck out to Mike Pandolfo (Burlington). He then fed the puck to Mullen who was at the left faceoff circle in front of Fields. Mullen crossed into center ice where he banked a shot off the boards in front of the BC bench. The puck made its way into the Eagles' goal and the Terriers had their final goal of the game and their weekend sweep.
"The sweep was unbelievable," said Johnson. "And, the fact that we swept BC made it awesome.
"I think the key was we were thorough all weekend," said Johnson. "We played in-your-face hockey. We didn't give them much room to make plays."
"This afternoon's game was a lot like Friday night's game," said Parker. "These games could have gone either way. It was important for us to get the sweep because these were league games, and we wanted to keep pace with New Hampshire and Lowell.
"I think we showed a lot of poise this weekend," concluded Parker. "Plus, we got really good goaltending."
Fields, who also earned the win against BC on Friday night, improved his record this season to 12-3-2. He is now 6-0-1 in his last seven games and has a 1.98 GAA and a .925 save percentage to go along with his record.
