BOSTON - The Vermont women's basketball team shot 57.1 percent from three-point range, including 5-for-7 in the second half, as the Catamounts defeated host Boston University, 76-65, at Case Gymnasium on Saturday afternoon (Feb.2).
For the Catamounts, it was their 13th straight win over the Terriers, dating back to a 71-61 B.U. win on February 10, 1996.
"They're a very good program," said Terrier head coach Margaret McKeon. "But out kids showed a lot of character to fight in this game."
The Terriers (12-8, 5-4) played their best first half of the season, connecting on 53.3 percent from the floor, with freshman forward Larissa Parr (Eau Claire, WI) scoring 14 of her career- and game-high 21 points.
After trading the lead 17 times, the Terriers took a 38-34 advantage into halftime.
But B.U. cooled off to start the second half, and the Catamounts charged, going on a 16-3 run led by back-to-back three-pointers from Lani Boardman and a three-pointer from both Morgan Hall and Libby Smith. Vermont led 57-50 at 8:07.
"There are two halves to every game," said McKeon. "We missed all those shots to start off the second half and then offensively we were back on our heels."
Junior guard Alison Argentieri (Hornell, NY) kept the Terriers within the hunt, hitting three consecutive three-pointers as B.U. trailed 59-56 at 7:05. For the game, the Terriers hit 53.8 percent from three-point range, including 5-of-8 in the second half.
But the Catamounts extended their lead at the free throw line, connecting on 13-of-15 in the final seven minutes.
Hall and Aaron Yanzti led the Catamounts with 17 points each. Argentieri finished with 14 points and Katie Terhune (Port Murray, NJ) added 10.
Vermont (12-7, 6-2) outrebounded the Terriers, 35-26, with Libby Smith grabbing a team-high nine boards.
Freshman forward Adrienne Norris (Delafield, WI) had a game-high nine rebounds to go along with her nine points.
