Jekabs Redlihs
Freshman Jekabs Redlihs, the MVP of last weekend's Ice Breaker Tournament, has been honored by Hockey East by being named the League's Defensive Player of the Week.
In the two-game tournament that opened B.U.'s 2002-03 season, Redlihs had a goal and two assists and a plus-2 as the Terriers defeated Northern Michigan in a shootout on the opening night and came back with an impressive 5-1 win over RPI in the title game.
In Friday night's (October 11th) tournament opener, Redlihs, who comes from Riga, Latvia but played for Apple Core in the Eastern Junior Hockey League last year, scored the game-tying goal with just 6:42 to play in regulation. The two teams ended regulation knotted at 4-4 and played a scoreless five-minute overtime session. The game then went into a shootout to determine the team that would advance to Saturday (October 12th) night's title game. In the first shootout, both the Terriers and Wildcats scored twice. Then, in the second shootout, which was sudden death, freshman Brad Zancanaro (Trenton, MI) scored the decisive goal.
In Saturday night's title game, Redlihs picked up assists on the goals by sophomore Brian McConnell (Norfolk) and junior Frantisek Skladany (Martin, Slovakia).
The Terriers, who were ranked number five in the nation entering this past weekend, will open the home portion of their schedule this Friday night when they host the University of Vermont at 7:00 p.m.
