West Hartford, CT - Senior guard Katie Terhune (Port Murray, NJ) scored a game-high 20 points, hitting 12-of-12 from the free throw line, as the Boston University women's basketball team defeated Hartford, 71-62, in front of 1,349 at the Chase Family Arena on Saturday, Feb. 7.
As a team, the Terriers (12-7, 7-3) hit 30-of-33 free throws to pick up their fifth straight victory and move into a tie with the Hawks (16-5, 7-3) for second place in the America East standings.
With three of the team's starters in foul trouble early in the first half, senior forward Marisa Moseley (Springfield, MA) stepped up, scoring 12 of her season-high 15 points in the first half. Moseley scored 10 of B.U.'s first 12 points and the Terriers took a 33-24 lead at the break.
Along with Moseley, junior forward Larissa Parr (Eau Claire, WI) also had a strong outing while filling in for classmates Becky Bonner (Concord, NH) and Adrienne Norris (Delafield, WI), who both sat with early foul trouble. For the game, Parr scored 13 points and hit 4-of-4 from the free throw line.
In the second half, Hartford's Liz Stich scored 10 of the Hawks first 12 points as the Hawks narrowed the gap, 43-38, with 12:36 left to play.
Freshman guard Nadia Bibbs (Oak Forest, IL) drained a three-pointer from the right corner, capping an 8-2 Terrier run that extended B.U.'s lead to 51-40 at 8:13.
Erika Messam converted a three-point play as the Hawks closed in, 53-48, with 4:40 remaining.
The Terriers converted 18-of-19 free throws over the final 4:31 of play to seal the road win.
B.U. out-rebounded Hartford, 34-32, and forced 19 turnovers. Bibbs finished with a game-high six rebounds and nine points. Terhune had five rebounds and five assists to go along with her 20 points.
B.U. plays its first-ever game at UMBC on Wednesday, Feb. 11, at 7:00 p.m.
