The Boston University men's soccer team (8-4-4, 3-3-1 America East) will vie for a win over host University of Maine (0-16-0, 0-7-0) to finish fifth in the conference on Saturday, Oct. 21 in Orono, Maine. The Terriers will close out the regular season with the contest against the Black Bears.
BU has secured a spot in the America East Tournament and will finish fifth in the standings with a win Saturday or with either a) a Stony Brook loss, or b) a tie and a Stony Brook tie. Otherwise the Terriers will finish sixth.
The Terriers rebounded after a heartbreaking 1-0 overtime loss to Albany on Oct. 13 with a 1-0 win over the University of Hartford at home on Oct. 18.
With just 16:49 left in regulation against the Hawks, BU drove down into Hartford territory and freshman Richy Dorman (Flintshire, Wales) took a shot that was stopped by Hawk goalkeeper Matt Glaeser. However, Glaeser could not control the rebound, which slipped back out to Dorman. The freshman midfielder tapped the ball to sophomore Petur Sigurdsson (Hafnarfjordur, Iceland), who drove it past Glaeser for the game's lone score.
Hartford did give the Terriers a scare at 80:16 when the Hawks crossed a ball dangerously close to the BU goalmouth on an indirect free kick. None of the Hartford players, however, was able to create an opportunity.
Sigurdsson leads the Terriers with six goals and one assist for 13 points. Sophomore Jin Oh (Dededo, Guam) has tallied three goals for six points, and Oh's classmates Dan Schultz (Cincinnati, Ohio) and Neil Hlavaty (Lombard, Ill.), and freshman Samuel Appiah (Obuasi, Ghana) each have two goals. Schultz has recorded three assists and Hlavaty and Appiah one apiece.
Senior goalie Zach Riffett (Brenham, Tex.) has allowed 11 goals through 15 games for a goals against average of 0.67 and has made 54 saves to record a save percentage of 0.830. His record is 7-4-4.
BU holds a 27-3-4 overall advantage in the series with Maine. The Terriers are 17-1-3 under head coach Neil Roberts. BU posted 22 straight wins in games from 1976 to 1997 and had a 26-0-1 mark from '76 to 2003. Maine's 3-2 win in 2004 was its first in the series since a 2-1 victory in 1975.
The Black Bears are 0-16-0 coming into tomorrow's contest. They are 0-7-0 in America East play. Senior midfielder Cooper Friend and sophomore forward Dimitri Anastasiou lead the Black Bears. Friend has scored four goals and three assists, while Anastasiou has two goals. Junior goalie Giacomo Brunino is 0-10-0 and has a GAA of 2.73 and a save percentage of 0.670.
