April 1, 2006

BOSTON – Boston University men’s ice hockey senior co-captain David Van der Gulik (Abbotsford, B.C.) was named March’s Hockey East CCM/RBK Hockey Player of the Month, as announced by the league on March 31. In addition, senior blueliner Dan Spang (Winchester, Mass.) was a runner-up for the award, while junior netminder John Curry (Shorewood, Minn.) was runner-up for the ITECH Goaltender of the Month award.

Van der Gulik notched two hat tricks in a three-game span en route to Hockey East tournament MVP honors. He finished the month with eight goals in eight games, and added four assists and a league-leading +12 rating in captaining the Terriers to their first league tournament title since 1997 and held a 7-1-0 record.

Upon his return to the BU lineup after sitting out the first 15 games with an injury, the team went 21-3-2 after holding a 5-7-2 record without Van der Gulik. In just 25 games, he totaled 22 points on 11 goals and 11 assists with a +15 rating.

Spang earned the runner-up nod after the defenseman racked up 10 points on five goals and five assists in eight March games, while also holding a +7 rating. Meanwhile, Curry was runner-up for the league’s top goalie for registering a 7-1-0 record with a 2.25 goals-against average and .912 save percentage.

The Terriers ended the 2005-06 campaign with a 26-10-4 record, while earning the Beanpot title and both the Hockey East regular-season and tournament championships.
