Hanover, N.H. -
The Boston University women's soccer team battled through 110 minutes of action with Dartmouth and came away with a 1-1 draw on Wednesday evening. Sophomore Corie Halasz netted the Terriers' lone goal and classmate Janie Reilly made seven saves, including one in overtime, as they move to 6-5-1 overall and the Big Green stands at 4-3-1.
BU outshot Dartmouth, 18-17, and put 12 shots on goal. Halasz's goal came at 37:15, when freshman Jessica Luscinski sent a pass on the ground to Halasz, who finished it off with a low, hard shot to the far post. Dartmouth retaliated in the 83rd minute with Peyton Tata's second goal of the season.
The Terriers' first scoring threat came in the 10th minute when junior Farrell McClernon connected on a cross from Halasz, but her one-timed shot went over the crossbar. BU and Dartmouth continued to go back and forth with possession; however, neither team was able to get past the respective backlines. Halasz put two shots on goal through the first 15 minutes, but Dartmouth goalkeeper Laurel Peak was positioned to make the stops.
The Big Green nearly put one in the back of the net in the 15th minute when Kelsey Quick came in on a breakaway; however, defender Shannon Mullen blocked the point-blank strike and deflected it out of bounds. On the ensuing corner kick, Aly Hubbard headed the ball back towards the net, and Reilly came up with the diving save.
After some more back and forth action through the midfield, the Terriers lit up the scoreboard in the 38th minute when Luscinski sent a crisp pass to Halasz, who was streaking down the left flank and then struck a low hard shot into the far right corner for her second goal of the season. As time expired in the first stanza, the Big Green made one last push, but Reilly punched the ball out of the box to maintain the shutout going into halftime.
To start the second half, BU kept the pressure on the Big Green's defense, barely allowing the ball out of the offensive zone through the first ten minutes of play. However, in the 57th minute, Dartmouth's Kelsey Quick came down the right side and sent a low pass through the six-yard box. Reilly came off her line to cut it off and prevent the Big Green's offense from getting on the other end of it. Dartmouth continued to pressure as Reilly was forced to make a handful of clears near the top of the 18-yard box over the next 10 minutes. The Big Green's Emily Forline hit the crossbar in the 66th minute and on the rebound Reilly came off her line to halt the play.
Dartmouth knotted the contest at one with less than eight minutes remaining in regulation as Peyton Tata finished on a rebound off a free kick from Kelsey Quick. Halasz made one last attempt with two minutes left, but Peak's save sent the game into overtime.
In overtime, Halasz nearly put the game away with a curving shot to the upper left corner, but a leaping save by Peak maintained the deadlock. In the second overtime neither team was able to capitalize on their chances.
BU returns to action on Sunday, Oct. 5 when it travels to Vermont for a 1 p.m. kick off.
