CAMBRIDGE, Mass. - The Boston University field hockey team suffered its first home loss in conference play in nearly three years on Saturday afternoon, as Maine came away with a 2-1 win at Jack Barry Field. Freshman Giovanna Monaco scored the lone goal for the Terriers, who move to 7-8 overall and 2-1 against America East opponents.

BU held a commanding 20-4 lead in shots and earned 13 penalty corners while allowing only one. However, the Terriers were unable to capitalize on several early scoring chances before allowing the Black Bears to score on their only two shots of the second half.

Maine broke a scoreless tie at 36:56 when freshman Stephanie Gardiner found classmate Kelly Newton at the right post for a redirect that eluded BU goalkeeper Kim Kastuk.

Less than a minute later, the Black Bears recorded the eventual game-winner. Sophomore Maire Dineen set up senior Nicole Emery for a fast break up the left side. Emery dribbled towards the goal before tucking a shot inside the right post past the reach of Kastuk.

Maine's Jackie D'Amato received a yellow card at the 55:03 mark, at which point the Terriers pulled Kastuk in favor of another attacker.

BU was not able to take advantage of the five-minute span with an extra player, but ended up cutting the lead in half with 5:16 left in regulation. Attacking along the right edge of the circle, junior Nikki Lloyd sent an entry pass in that was redirect just above the near post by Monaco into the left corner of the cage.

The Terriers pressed hard for an equalizer, but came up empty, as Maine came away with the upset and improved to 4-9 overall and 1-2 in conference play. Freshman Brittany Fleck made six saves in goal for the Black Bears.

BU will return to action on Wednesday (Oct. 22) when it hosts No. 9 Connecticut, who handed top-ranked Syracuse its first loss of the season on Saturday. Game time for Wednesday's tilt is 3 p.m.
