LOWELL, Mass. - Behind goals from six different players, the Boston University men's ice hockey team posted a 6-2 road victory over 17th-ranked UMass Lowell on Friday evening at Tsongas Arena. Junior Brandon Yip led the way with a career-high four points (1g, 3a), helping the Terriers improve to 9-14-4 overall and an even 8-8-3 in Hockey East play.

Freshman Colin Wilson put up a goal and two assists, while junior John McCarthy had his first career multi-point game with a goal and a helper. Senior Pete MacArthur and freshman defensemen Colby Cohen and Kevin Shattenkirk all found the back of the net.

BU led throughout the game, scoring its first goal just two minutes, 12 seconds into the contest and never looking back. The visitors took a 2-0 lead into the first intermission and despite having its lead cut in half at 8:03 of the second, the Terriers reeled off three more goals before the end of the period to take a commanding 5-1 lead.

The Terriers outshot the River Hawks, 35-29, as sophomore Brett Bennett made 27 saves to pick up the win in goal. Each team scored twice on the power play with BU having six chances and Lowell having five.

Senior Ryan Weston got things started for the Terriers, breaking up a misplayed pass by Lowell goaltender Nevin Hamilton behind the cage before finding McCarthy all alone in front of a virtually empty net in the third minute of play.

The Terriers converted on their second power-play chance of the night to take a 2-0 lead. Cohen one-timed a shot past Hamilton from the left point on assists from Wilson and Yip at 13:33.

The River Hawks attempted to get back into the game in the second period and took full advantage of a 5-on-3 opportunity to cut their deficit in half. Freshman Maury Edwards blasted home a slapshot at 8:03 with assists going to sophomores Jeremey Dehner and Barry Goers.

BU, however, made sure that's as close as things would get, quickly tacking on two goals less than a minute apart before adding another near the end of the second.

MacArthur and classmate Bryan Ewing teamed up for a hard-earned goal 87 seconds after Edwards' goal. With the teams skating 4-on-4, the two seniors battled for a puck at the end boards, and after Ewing came away with it, he found MacArthur across the crease for a nifty backhand that snuck in for the team's third goal.

Just 42 seconds later on the power play, Yip started things with a long outlet pass to junior Matt Gilroy, who weaved through the defense and found Wilson at the left pipe for a redirect and a 4-1 lead.

Shattenkirk capped BU's three-goal second when he converted from the right point at 18:07 on assists from McCarthy and Yip.

UML once again used the power play to get on the board 10:28 of the third, as sophomore Ben Holmstrom redirected a puck past Bennett from the slot.

The Terriers put the finishing touches on the win - their first over a ranked team this season - when Yip completed his career night with a tally on helpers from Wilson and sophomore Luke Popko.

Hamilton only lasted the first period in goal for the River Hawks, making five saves. Sophomore Carter Hutton was between the pipes for the final two periods, recording 24 saves.

BU, which is now 20-2-1 in its last 23 games that took place between the Beanpot, will return to action on Monday in the Beanpot's consolation game against No. 14 Northeastern. Game time is set for 5 p.m.
