IOWA CITY, Iowa -- Despite a career-high 13 saves from sophomore goalkeeper Kim Kastuk, the Boston University field hockey team dropped a 5-1 decision to sixth-ranked Iowa on Sunday afternoon at Grant Field. Senior Hayly Ross scored her first goal of the season for the Terriers, who fall to 3-5 on the year.
Kastuk made eight saves in the second half alone to help her easily surpass her previous career high of nine, but the Hawkeye offense, led by a five-point day (2g, 1a) from senior Caroline Blaum, proved to be too much as Iowa improved to 6-2.
The Terriers earned the first penalty corner of the game and recorded the first two shots on goal, but both were turned away by Iowa goalkeeper Lissa Munley.
Iowa took a 1-0 lead into halftime thanks to a goal from Blaum at 21:44 off an assist by senior Roz Ellis.
Just 22 seconds into the second half, the Hawkeyes made it a 2-0 contest when Caitlin McCurdy sent home a shot from 10 yards out. Just over a minute later, Blaum tallied her second goal of the contest to give her team a 3-0 advantage.
Ross put the Terriers on the board at 42:16 when she redirected a pass from sophomore Maryette Stuart - her former high school teammate - past Munley.
Iowa, however, made sure that the Terriers would get no closer, as senior Lauren Pfeiffer scored off a corner just over four minutes after Ross's tally to make it a three-goal game once again.
The Hawkeyes capped the scoring in the 60th minute with a goal from sophomore Sarah Pergine
Iowa outshot the Terriers, 25-4, and held an 11-1 advantage in corners. Junior Haley Robinson recorded a defensive save for the Terriers.
BU will return to action on Saturday (Sept. 20) when it welcomes Old Dominion to Jack Barry Field for a noon contest.
