CAMBRIDGE, Mass. - Despite holding a 10-5 advantage in shots, the Boston University field hockey team fell to Old Dominion, 2-1, on Saturday afternoon at Jack Barry Field. Sophomore Maryette Stuart tied the game at 1-1 on a penalty stroke in the 44th minute, but the Lady Monarchs regained the lead and held off a late Terrier charge. BU falls to 3-6, while ODU improves to 2-6.

The Terriers allowed just two penalty corners on the day, but Old Dominion senior Katelyn Smither scored off both of them, including the game-winner with 24:40 left in regulation.

BU nearly opened the scoring in the eighth minute of play, but junior Nikki Lloyd's effort from just outside the left post was stopped with a defensive save from sophomore Stephanie Kratzer.

The Lady Monarchs drew a corner with just over 10 minutes left in the half and Smither converted at the top of the circle with assists from junior Hanna Warren and sophomore Loran Hatch.

BU, which held a 5-2 edge in shots at the half, continued to penetrate the circle in the second half and was rewarded with a corner in the 44th minute.

Senior Sheena Berry's shot was stopped by the body of an ODU defender just in front of the goal line, resulting in a penalty stroke. Stuart converted the chance at 43:41 to knot the game at 1-1.

Under two minutes later, Old Dominion recorded the game-winner with the exact corner combination from its first tally, as Smither scored with helpers from Warren and Hatch.

The Terriers created a handful of chances down the stretch, none better than a shot just outside the left post by freshman Kate Murphy in the 64th minute. However, senior netminder Kelly Driscoll made one of her five saves on the afternoon to allow ODU to keep its lead.

In addition to doubling up the Lady Monarchs in shots, BU held a 3-2 edge in corners. Sophomore Kim Kastuk made one save in goal for the Terriers.

BU will return to action on Sunday (Sept. 28) when it plays host to eighth-ranked Virginia at Boston College's Newton Campus Field. Game time is set for 1 p.m. The Terriers have defeated the Cavaliers in each of the past two seasons.
