WAKEFIELD, Mass. -
Boston University's Matt Gilroy has been named the Hockey East Pure Hockey Defensive Player of the Week, as announced by the league office on Monday. The senior defenseman scored a goal in each of the Terriers' two wins on the weekend, including a 5-2 home victory over No. 12 Boston College on Saturday.
Gilroy tallied the eventual game-winning goal and added an assist in the Terriers' 4-1 road triumph against Merrimack on Friday. The co-captain suffered a dislocated shoulder in the third period of the game, but managed to return to the lineup the following night.
On Saturday, Gilroy capped a run of five unanswered goals for the Terriers with a third-period power-play tally, as BU completed a five-point season series (2-0-1) against its archrival, Boston College.
For the year, Gilroy has 15 points on four goals and 11 assists. The two-time All-American has played in 123 consecutive games and boasts a career rating of plus-64, including a plus-8 mark so far this season.
Gilroy and the second-ranked Terriers will return to action on Friday (Jan. 23) when they kick off a home-and-home series with No. 11/12 New Hampshire at Agganis Arena. The game, which will be broadcast live by NESN, will start at 7:30 p.m.
