PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The No. 7 women's hockey team wrapped up its season series with Providence, dropping a 6-2 decision to the Friars on Sunday afternoon at Schneider Arena. The loss puts the Terriers at 5-4-5 on the season and 3-3-1-1 in conference play while Providence improves to 4-5-5 overall with a 3-2-3-2 conference mark.
BU struck first near the midway point of the first period, marking the third time in three games against the Friars this season the Terriers have scored the first goal. Melissa Anderson collected the puck off the boards behind the Friar goal and slipped a pass to Jonnie Bloemers on the near post who shoveled home her third tally of the year. The Friars equalized at the 6:07 mark, taking advantage of a drawn out goaltender as Nicole Anderson netted her fourth goal on the season. A late BU penalty gave the Friars some decent looks in the final two minutes of the period, but goalie Alissa Fromkin held tight to preserve the 1-1 score after one.
BU evened the score briefly at the 15:41 mark of the third as captain Melissa Tetreau netted her first goal of the season off assists from Kasey Boucher and Bloemers. The Friars responded with vigor, retaking the lead 12 seconds later on Anderson's second goal of the game and pushing the lead to 4-2 a minute after that as Anderson completed the hat-trick off feeds from Ashley Cottrell and Laura Veharanta.
The Friars added another tally with 12:16 left in the third as Anderson assisted on Cottrell's ninth goal of the season. Providence finished the scoring on an Alyse Ruff effort with under two minutes remaining in the game.
The hosts took the lead early in the second when Leigh Riley took advantage of a screen on the goalie and blasted home a shot top-shelf for a 2-1 lead at 17:15. The Terriers turned up the pressure and outshot the Friars 18-8 for the period, including a Laurel Koller effort that skipped off the right post, but were unable to convert and ended the middle period down 2-1.
The Terriers outshot the Friars 40-24 on the day, forcing Providence goalie Genevieve Lacasse to make 38 saves.
BU's next game is against Boston College as the Terriers travel up Commonwealth Ave. to Silvio Conte Forum on Wednesday, Nov. 18. Game time is slated for 7 p.m.
