The Terriers had a successful spring season that included five dates of competition against several teams in the region. The team played in both full-squad and 7v7, half-field games and came out on top in the vast majority of the contests.
"We were very happy with the way our young team progressed through the spring, as many of our players showed great versatility while gaining experience at multiple positions," said head coach Sally Starr. "Our final play day at Dartmouth was the culmination of putting everything together both technically and tactically and got us very excited for our potential to have a successful fall season."
The team held its annual banquet on Sunday, April 4, at the George Sherman Union. Senior Lizzie Perreault was named the team's most valuable player, sophomores Allie Dolce and Maryette Stuart both received the most improved player award, senior Hayly Ross was the recipient of the BUFHA Spirit Award for the third straight season and redshirt freshman Kali Cardoza earned the team's strength and conditioning award.
All of the team's athletic and academic accomplishments were recognized, including the regional All-America accolades of Perreault and fellow senior Holly Wiles. Ross, senior Sheena Berry, Dolce and freshman Rachael White were also recognized for being named to the NFHCA National Academic Squad.
Three-time All-American and current student assistant coach Pam Spuehler recently returned to Boston after a three-month stay in Australia.
Spuehler played 10 games with the Division I Labrador Tigerstix club team of the Gold Coast and Inner-City Leagues, and the squad went 9-1 in those contests, including a championship at the President's Cup tournament. She left Australia as the top goal-scorer in the league and recorded a hat trick in her first game.
Spuehler also coached players ages 7-10 and refereed both men's and women's games during her three-month stay Down Under.
Rising seniors Gabby Hajjar and Haley Robinson and rising sophomore Kate Murphy were all selected to the New England High Performance training squad that will compete at the 2009 National Championships in Virginia Beach on June 20-27.
The mission for the High Performance program is to prepare athletes in their respective regions to compete for and make the U.S. national training squad.
Spuehler and former assistant coach Tiffany Snow are also on the New England roster.
Rising senior Nikki Lloyd was recently named the winner of BU's Darwin Bicentennial 2009 Student Art Competition.
Students were asked to create an artwork inspired by a theme in the work of Charles Darwin in honor of the Charles Darwin Bicentennial year. Each finalist had to create a concept for their art piece and generate a PowerPoint presentation encompassing their piece, site specific areas and a price range for their piece to be made. Lloyd's piece was based on Darwin's Voyage of the Beagle and the path it took around the world.
Over 100 students entered the competition. Lloyd took home the first-place prize of $3000 in addition to having the honor of having her sculpture made and permanently displayed on the Boston University campus.
Former Terriers Jen Nixon-Mathis and Tina McDavitt were named to the 2009-10 U.S. National Indoor Team. The team will represent the United States at the 2010 Indoor Pan Am Cup in March 2010 with the hopes of qualifying for the 2011 Indoor World Cup in Poznan, Poland. The roster was completed after open tryouts were held in February at Winning Edge Sports in Oaks, Pa.
