AMHERST, Mass. - The Boston University field hockey team came up short against No. 9 Iowa at the UMass Invitational on Sunday, dropping a 3-1 contest to the Hawkeyes at Garber Field. Junior Allie Dolce scored her first goal of the season for the Terriers, who doubled up Iowa in corners, 4-2, and recorded nine shots on the day while allowing just 10.

BU, which knocked off No. 17 UMass, 3-2, in overtime on Friday, now stands at 1-3 on the season. Iowa earned its first win of the season after losses to three ranked teams (Wake Forest, North Carolina, Massachusetts).

Iowa opened the scoring at the 3-minute mark and then added two goals less than three minutes apart in the early stages of the second half. Dolce put BU on the board in the 57th minute, but that would be the final goal of the game.

After not recording a shot before halftime, the Terriers outshot the Hawkeyes, 9-4, in the second half.

"It was a frustrating loss," said head coach Sally Starr. "We had several circle penetrations in the first half, but weren't able to produce shots from them. Once Iowa added the two goals early in the second half, we played great for the final 20 minutes, but it was too little, too late."

Jess Werley gave the Hawkeyes an early 1-0 lead on a goal off a rebound at 3:00. The lead grew to 3-0 when Sarah Drake scored off a corner at 36:56 and then assisted on Tricia Dean's goal soon after at 39:27.

BU got on the board at 56:24, as Dolce inserted a corner before knocking in a rebound from a shot by freshman Jacinda McLeod.

The Terriers record the final seven shots of the game but were unable to further cut into their deficit.

"We called a timeout after their third goal and immediately elevated our play," added Starr. "Everything was better - pressing, passing, defending - and we played with much more urgency."

Junior Amanda Smith made four saves, including three in the first half, for BU, while Kathleen McGraw saved four of the five shots on goal she faced in the Iowa cage.

The Terriers will return to action on Saturday (Sept. 12) when they play host to cross-town rival Boston College. Game time is set for 1 p.m.
